Miss Bhutan 2008 preliminary
"From a civil servant who wanted to hide herself from the camera fearing her boss to the teenager who kept running to the toilet out of anxiety, there was more behind the scenes than on the ramp of the Miss Bhutan 2008 preliminary"
July 13, 2008-Thimphu: They wore the latest colors of lipstick and matching eyeliner. The fake hair and the thick foundation applied on their faces made them look like caked-up dolls. They pranced to the toilet to keep fixing their makeup.
Dressed in a full set kira of various colors, some stood out in the crowd while a few remained at one corner of the room, dull like the color of their kira.
Tall, fair-skinned, rosy-cheeked, moon-faced, and skinny girls between the age of 18 and 28 gathered at the Druk Hotel yesterday for the preliminary of the Miss Bhutan 2008 Pageant, the first of its kind in Bhutan.
Nothing like the super models or beauty queens one have often seen on television, but these Bhutanese beauties were true followers of Sushmita Sen and Aishwariya Rai all set to make an identity of their own.
Occasionally there was a problem. One girl in a blue kira kept staying away from the video camera. “I am a civil servant and I can’t be seen on camera. I don’t know what my boss will say,” she whispered to a friend.
Another girl in a green kira tried to hide her face with the pamphlets of the pageant distributed to all the contestants. “She is my classmate, probably she is shy to be a contestant,” says an employee of Druk Hotel.
Meanwhile, the four-member jury took their seats. Lily Wangchuk, chairperson of the jury, looking like a contestant herself threw a warm smile around.
Tshering Gyeltshen almost took the contestants’ breath away as he moved around flaunting his movie-star smile. Popular BT columnist and managing director of Centennial Radio, Dorji Wangchuk, added extra charm to the room followed by the actress of Chepai Bu, Lhaki Dolma.
Apart from the giggly gossiping in the real beauty queen way there was constant movement of the contestants in and out of the toilet. Something surely must have been going on in there! Some were fixing their hair, some their makeup, some checking out themselves in the mirror and some said they came there to feel more relaxed.
Once in the hall, everyone was seated, mostly with their legs crossed, playing with the hair, with flickering eyelids and listening carefully to the director of MPC Entertainment, Karma Tshering, while he introduced the jury and like a glamour supporter pointing out the pros of being in the glamour world.
“You are part of history,” said Tshering Gyeltshen as they nodded dreaming of the Miss Bhutan 2008 title.
Karma Tshering spoke of the various grooming activities they will have to go through once the final 20 contestants were selected. There was a burst of laughter in the hall when he mentioned the girls will be taught table manners.
The official desk of the pageant had numerous unfilled mark sheets with the contestants’ names on the top waiting to be analyzed and filled by the judges. Another pile of papers had a sketch of a person with the size of the bust, waist and hips of the contestants.
The first round for the Miss Bhutan 2008 started with contestant number two from Paro, already looking like a star with the spot light right on her, cameras flashing, judges and journalists studying her.
Questions were thrown by the jury at her from dreams, to likes and dislikes to happiness to what she feared the most. As she answered few questions she was mostly awe struck not knowing what to say. “It’s not about whether your answers are right or wrong, we just want to know you,” said one of the judges trying to make the contestant feel comfortable.
Confidently but confusingly the contestant made a bold statement saying she was not sure if she will be able to take part in the contest. “My friends and family asked me to take part but I am not sure as the contest will take longer as I have to work too,” she told the judges.
However, the judges were taken aback when the foot-stomping music played and she presented herself really well with her catwalk.
Questions by the judges followed as each new beauty queen aspirant took the hot chair and walked the non-existent ramp.
