Subject: Praise the Lord and Paso the Ammunition!

For those of you who might be wondering, yes, Keith Urban did, in fact, have a concert recently in Paso Robles, CA.

He was nearly late for his own party and the only "tall one" by his side was Jerry Flowers, but for almost and hour and forty-five minutes, our man from Manly regaled the assembled crowd with a few of his lesser known hits. (Anybody ever heard of a song called "SLY?") LOL!

Details inside . . .

The Grandstand at the Paso Robles Event Center is just that, a grandstand built to house a full-scale rodeo or even a truck pull. It’s that big. ( And with a rodeo scheduled for Saturday night to close the fair, the stock pens under the bleachers at either end were stocked and full of cattle. Phew! )

The permanent seats are aluminum bleachers set up around the sides of the arena that reach up into the sky. On the stage side, they actually run in back of the stage level causing Keith to point to the group behind him on his left and ask, “What the he**’s up with that? Did they *tell* you you’d be sitting there?” and “What did you do?” as if he thought they were being punished. LOL! He tried to compensate for their restricted view of the show by taking himself over there to climb into the lower bleachers as he sang YLGIMS before running along the front row in front of the stage to high five the lucky few who had already gotten pretty lucky by getting those seats. LOL!

The floor seating was by way of innumerable folding chairs laid out in a fan pattern that radiated out from the stage. Most were of the standard, metal variety, but the “better seats” down front had some blue upholstery on them – not much, but some. And this was a rodeo arena, folks - strictly dirt floor all the way!

Keith opened the show with a rousing rendition of DGB meant to stir the blood and wake the neighbors with its driving, pulsing beat. He followed this with his “cool down lap” of snarling guitar licks on WTBE. ROS – Electric, sensual and hot complete with red over blue stage lighting and maybe the “connection” highlight of the show after which he greeted the crowd and spent a few minutes “chatting up” that “low-key trip to Australia” we’ve all heard so much about. LOL!

I’ve always loved his live performance of BFTGOG – just Keith, the crowd and a guitar. He sang the verse and we sang the chorus back, but he surprised us with an ad-libbed verse of Dolly Parton’s classic, “Jolene” thrown into the mix before he finished up with a final chorus from “Grace of God.” He then launched into a solo and most unexpected version of “Take It to the Limit” by the Eagles telling the audience, “We’re really just making it up now” and maybe he was, but the band reassembled in time to help him finish it out in fine fashion. The acoustic set was breezy and over too soon, but I must say, it’s a little different to have MMOU wedged between JO and YTOM. He did it quietly and rather sweetly, I thought, but didn’t have much to say about it. He didn’t mention Nicole.

YTOM still had an edge to it like it did in the beginning, but the finish was less raucous than some of you may remember. The raised fist has become a production point with a full parade rest and special lighting all its own which made it seem a little stiff. But when he started up again, there was a bit more pleading in his voice than I remember, giving it that heartbreak, choked up feel it hasn’t had in a long time.

The rest of the set was vintage Keith – strutting the stage doing half a song on the right side, half a song on the left and finishing in the middle. They wrapped up the first part with WWWBM with Keith straining not one, but two strings on his guitar for that swaying note at the beginning. He pumped the chords, pumped the bridge and steamed through to the end as if he still gets a little something out of the song.

The encore was a fast paced affair. First was TIWC with just Keith and the piano visible in the low lighting on stage. Is was a good, sincere performance, but in a softer, more reflective mode than last year. He did the “head-butting,” pushing and backing the other guys in the band to the microphone on “Joker,” and growled his “I’ll bet you are” when we got to “midnight toker” on the call back. The fun moment of the evening was when Keith beckoned to the wings and produced a digital camera. He walked to the edge of the stage and announced, “My mama ain’t gonna believe this!” and took a picture of the crowd waving their approval. His last song of the night was a spirited rendition of SLY complete with the kick-spins he used to do at the end. I thought that was cool.

The reviews I've read from elsewhere confirm my impression that he might have been tired doing this show, but I enjoyed it and enjoyed seeing him again.

If you’re going to see him this summer, I hope you enjoy it, too.

Mo
