A CHALLENGE to our writers.....
Spring seems to have sprung here in the Mid-Atlantic - at least the crocuses blooming by my front walk say so. Today is a glorious, sunny warm and breezy day, perfect for riding around with the windows down and KU blasting out of the speakers (which I did get to do today - whee!). But for all the excitement of warmer days, some aren't feeling the urge to write. Hmmm...
So how can we kick-start our muses? Well, I was thinking of a "FanFic Challenge". Every month or so, I'll issue a challenge and you see if you can write a KU story about it. Sometimes it'll be "include this phrase in a story", or "write a story using these words", or maybe even a situation to work out. Then everyone (who wants to) write a short story and post it. No time limits, but keep it around 5-6 pages in Word. If your story takes on a life of it's own and ends up needing more chapters, that's fine, too, but make sure the initial installment includes the challenge.
So, since it's spring, here is your first challenge:
Include these words in a story:
kite
microphone
yellow
Easter eggs
No grab those keyboards and GO FOR IT!

my story -- Chesneygirl73, 10:39:52 03/11/06 Sat [1]
I woke up early to the sound of birds chirping, and the rays of golden sunshine filtering in to my bedrooom. I threw the covers back and made a beeline to the backdoor. Swinging them open, the warm air and the sweet smell of springtime hit me like a ton of bricks. It was a perfect day and I was going to make the most of it. I hurried up and got dressed and grabbed my book, my shades and a kite for the heck of it. I got into my car and threw the top down, I popped in a Keith Urban CD and blasted the cd player, a momentary vision of Keith raced in to my head, ya know the way he tosses his microphone around? Wow , he is hot. So I head off to the park, everybody else seemed to have the same idea I did. It was so packed. I found a quiet little spot, laid my blanket out and began to read my lastest novel my Jackie Collins, my favorite author. I Must have drifted off to sleep.
"Excuse me, miss," the voice said. I looked up at the most amazing blue eyes I had ever seen. "May I sit here with you, this place is rather busy, and I don't want to be seen." he asked. Focusing in on him a little more, I could've swore he was Keith Urban, he had an accent, and then it hit me, Oh My God it is Keith URban. " Sure." I replied. So he sat down and asked my name and we shook hands as we exchanged pleasantries.
" beautiful day isn't it?" he said. " Perfect, warm air, the sun shining and a sitting next to a beautiful woman, life is good/" He said that as he cocked his head my way and smiled that devilish little smile, all the while the soft wind blowing his hair into his face.
" Yes it is a perfect day, and thank you for the compliment." I responded. Not able to take my eyes off of him. He suggested a walk in the woods, it was getting too crowded for his liking. So we set off on our journey. THere is a little pond off in the distance, so we grabbed our things and headed off. We stopped a couple of times to look at the flowers that were blooming, they were a brillian yellow color and smelled so good. We talked and laughed the whole way there. I laid the blanket out and we sat on it, the rippling of the pond was the only sound between us. He looked over at me and before I could protest he kissed me. I melted into his kiss, his lips were so soft and strong, yet gentle. We both fell backwards and he pulled me onto him, he pulled the hair back out of my face and said to me, "You know this day would be completely perfect if you would let me make love to you." Who am I to object, Keith Urban is telling me he wants to make love to me. " Ok Keith anything you say." I manage to say. He stands me up and we start to disrobe each other, before I know it we are laying back down, and he is kissing me and he is touching me and just as we begin to make love................." Miss, miss, excuse me miss." a voice says. " We are having a scavenger hunt and we are looking for Easter Eggs, have you seen any?" I look up at them and lay back down frustrated and tell them no I haven't. I gather my stuff up and am cussing under my breath the whole time. When I look up and coming towards me is a man with a guitar slung over his back, the wind blowing his hair in his face, and the most amazing blue eyes I have ever seen.. The End

My Turn -- Rodeo, 22:43:53 03/11/06 Sat [1]
I strummed a few notes on my guitar and growled in frustration. I had been working on a song for weeks now and just when I thought I had gotten the tune right, I couldn't find the right note. Tag and I were sitting a little ways off from an unoccupied trail at the state park. I always came here to work on my songwriting, but this was the first time I had brought Tag along.
"You Know maybe the reason I can't finnish this thing is because your bad luck," I said smiling at him.
I bit my yellow guitar pick trying to think of something, anything that might sound good.
Then I heard the most beautiful tune drifting through the trees. It was someone singing. I started picking out the notes on the guitar. I looked up to see a tall man walking alone on the path. He spotted me and strolled over. His eyes were the color blue that I used to die easter eggs. I smiled and held out my hand. He took it and introduce himself eventhough I already knew who he was.
Tag got up and made himself at home with Keith, laying beside him a deserting me. Keith and I talked for a while, his voice was amazing, nowonder people enjoyed hearing it over microphone so much. I told him I was working on writing my first single. He seemed happy to hear this and he helped my with the tune a bit adding a lot of riffs that I doubted I could play. After spending ten minutes with him my heart had drifted off to heaven like a kite caught by the wind.
A few months later I woke up to someone turning on the radio beside my bed. I heard that familiar riff and opened my eyes. Keith was standing over me already dressed. He gave me a kiss. Congrats, he said. I suppose it was because it was my first song that made it radio. Its amazing how music can bring two people together like nothing else. To this day Keith keeps reminding me that music is the saver of lives. If it wasn't for that day in the park we wouldn't have met, and our lives wouldn't have been as great as they are now. So I'd like to thank the music, for making me and Keith happy together, and for saving my life.

Here goes nothing -- ShanBan, 17:24:01 03/12/06 Sun [1]
She walked out her door, yellow kite in hand. It did seem a little juvanile to her to go out flying a kite, but it was such a beautiful day, she couldn't resist. She got to the park, which was suprisingly empty and looked for a good take off spot.
She decided on a spot next to a bush of wildflowers, the colors of easter eggs. Once she got the kite up in the air the wind started to die so she ran with it, looking behind her not seeing where she was going. The next thing she knew, THUD, she had ran straight into something hard, and now it was on top of her cutting of her air supply. "Oh my god are you ok?!", came a beautiful voice. When she opened her eyes she saw the warmest pair of eyes that matched the color of the sky. "Fine....." she mused, not being able to focus. The stranger with the "eyes" got off her and reached down to help her up. "I'm so sorry, I wasnt watching where I was going," she said nervously. She shyly looked up at the man and then it hit her.....this was the same man she heard swooning over the microphone at his concert not 24 hours ago. Realizing she had just body slmamed Keith Urban her cheeks turned scarlette with a blush and she proceed to apologize profusly. "Hey dont worry about it", he said lightly, "it's not everyday that I get tackled by a beautiful girl..." he smiled and winked at her. "Why do I find that hard to believe?" she questioned, unaware of where this boldness was coming from. He laughed and joked with her, "Oh god if you only knew....you should see the amount ER visits I have from injuries after being knocked to the ground....." She laughed with him, "Oh no I didnt break anything did I?" "Nothing that cant be fixed" he winked at her, flirting with her, making her blush. "Acctually if I remember correctly I landed on top of you, so I should be asking you if I broke anything...." "Well if you did, I shall take alot of pride in knowing you broke it." "Oh no please tell me you're not one of those crazy people thats going to tell everyone and I'm going to have to read about how I broke your ribs and then asked you to marry me in the papers tomarrow."
He continued joking with her and before they knew it the sun was begining to set. "Can I ask you something?" he said. "Anything.." she relpied. "Would you join me for dinner tonight?" "I'd love to," she smiled. "Fantastic, I'll pick you up at 8...." "Sounds great I'll see you then...."
The End!

I bet ya'll thought I had jumped ship -- kennedypratt, 01:07:23 03/13/06 Mon [1]
I got up slowly from my bar stool, gripping the copper edge of the bar trying to steady myself enough to walk out. Last call, I hated last call. My friend and I had been there since eight that night but I still had not managed to consume enough alcohol to erase the image in my mind. I slipped off my wedge heels and walked barefoot out onto the cold concrete sidewalk.
My friend was still at the end of the bar, chatting up the bartender who had served us graciously all night. I overheard her giving him her cell number, making plans for when he got off work in about an hour. So much for continuing our pity party at her house, I had the feeling I was about to be dropped off at home to commiserate by myself.
I shivered a little in the spring air, it had been so warm earlier when we selected our party clothes but now the wind had picked up and I shivered in the damp Nashville air. I bummed a cigarette off a young man who had had been leaving the bar at the same time. I didn’t really smoke but I felt since I had done so much damage to my liver why not give my lungs a little beating as well. I wasn’t much for conversation so the young man soon drove away in his Volkswagen beetle; just as well, I couldn’t date a man whose car looked like an Easter egg.
I smoke a little more furiously while I grew more impatient with my friend. I heard a familiar voice behind me, “Is this a new habit?”
He gripped my wrist in a firm manner, much like how he gripes the microphone, but I didn’t let go of my cigarette. I jerked my arm away and took another deep drag, exhaling slowly, eyeing him from behind my veil of smoke. God he looked good! Blue tee shirt, ratty jeans and boots. Then again, there were few things he didn’t look good in. I tried to appear cool.
“Well if it isn’t Keith Urban. Back from the land of botox and implants are we?”
He gave me a coy smile. “Been drinking a little, have we baby?”
I glanced at his posse of rambunctious boys that stayed a few yards back.
“Probably no more than you.” I replied.
“Ah now darlin’, I’ve had a couple beers and your barely standing upright and slurring your words.” He quipped back. “And this is cute too” he said reaching for my ear, where I had tucked one of the little yellow drink umbrellas.
With his hand still on the side of my head I reached toward his neck with two fingers.
“Glad you lost the tie; you looked awfully uncomfortable with it around your neck.”
He gave me a quizzical look. “What tie would that be, are you really that drunk?”
I stepped back, out of his reach. “Oh go fly a kite Keith! You know what I’m talking about. I had to look at that tie all over TV and the magazines.”
“Go fly a kite? What does that mean? You lost me in the English to English translation baby.” He laughed.
“I means, go f…”
Before I could finish my friend walked up. She looked at me and then at Keith. “So, I see things are about the same between you two. Good to see you Keith.” She gave him a one armed hug and he returned with a kiss on the cheek.
“Are you keeping an eye on this one here?” He asked her, nodding towards me.
“Oh you know that is quite a job, she gets away from me sometimes.” She joked back.
I was beginning to get mad. I hated being talked about like I wasn’t there. Their voices swam in my head, becoming indistinct and very low; they were discussing something and glancing occasionally at me. The glow of the streetlights and neon bar signs were disorienting me. I needed to sit down. I started to pitch forward when Keith caught me around the waist.
“Whoa now sweetheart, no trips to the ER tonight, and you don’t want to get blood on your pretty clothes.”
My friend took me by the shoulders, “Listen sweetie, that bartender in there wants me to go grab something to eat with him, and Keith is going to drive you home, okay? I’ll call you tomorrow, late tomorrow.”
Before I could protest she turned on her heels and walked back into the bar. Keith stood beside me, one arm around my shoulders, leaning into me with his hip supporting my body. “Can you walk baby? Should I carry you?”
I pushed him off, “Of course I can walk, and I walked out of that bar didn’t I?”
He stepped towards me, his face just inches from mine. “Of course you did darlin’ but its an awful long walk home, maybe if your nice you will get to ride in the car.”
I gave him a sneering look but made no reply. I could smell him he was so close. It was his smell that got me every time. He tossed his keys to one of his friends who went to retrieve the car from the parking deck. We stood on the sidewalk together; my cigarette was still burning in my hand. The tension between us created a cement wall. I knew there would be little hope of breaking it down this time.
He lifted my wrist gently, “There is no smoking in the Denali, sorry.”
I took a final drag before putting it out and dropping it into a trash can.
“Always the responsible citizen, even when completely hammered.” He commented.
I tried not to smile and turned my face from him, starring up at the tops of the buildings. He stepped closer, behind me. I could feel his belt buckle against the small of my back and his hair tickling my bare shoulders. I tried not to shudder when he put his hands on my hips.
“Are you going to tell me what awful thoughts you were trying to drown out here tonight?”
I took in a deep breath. “I think you know the answer to that, but I know you’d love to here me say it. The image of you at the Oscars with her, looking like smitten kittens. I’m trying to get that image out of my head but I’m afraid it’s burned in. Seventy dollars of liquor couldn’t erase it.” I said as clearly as I could.
“I only caught some of that baby, you are slurring so much. I got Oscars, smitten, image and seventy dollars of liquor. Were those the important parts?” He giggled.
“Yeah, you got most of it.”
I tried not to cry. I tried not to change my breathing or sniffle. I hated drunk crying. I hated crying in general. But it wasn’t like he hadn’t seen it before. I couldn’t turn around; I knew if I did I would just bury my face in that space under his collar bone and cry and cry and cry.
Luckily his friend pulled up just then with the car and he packaged me into the front seat. I avoided his eye contact as he reached around me to buckle my seatbelt. During the ride home I closed my eyes as he and his friends made small talk, by the time he dropped the last one off I was fast asleep.
I was awoken in what seemed like hours later by his hand on my shoulder.
“Princess, wake up, we’re home.” He whispered to me.
I opened my bleary eyes and looked around at the lights and realized we were in his driveway.
“No, WE are not home, YOU are home Keith. You told Lindsay you would drive me home.” I stammered. I didn’t want to go in the house. I knew what would happen in there. I knew what would happen in the next few days if that happened. I knew I would get my heart broken, AGAIN.
“No, actually, I told her I would take care of you. I did just that right before you tried to take a header into the sidewalk. I said nothing about home.” He replied.
I started to wail inside the car. “Oh my god! I am drunk out of my mind, I need to go to bed and you want to debate with me!” I gripped my forehead. I was so dizzy, the interior of the car was spinning and I was seeing two, then four of Keith. He made no further discussion.
Keith walked around to my side of the car and opened the door. He unclipped my seatbelt and lifted me up by my arms. Shutting the door he guided me towards the sidewalk with one arm around my waist the other holding my left hand. We walked slowly in a not so straight line up the winding side walk.
I laughed, “Remember when you smashed your cell phone out here.”
He didn’t find that amusing. “One foot in front of the other baby, that’s it.”
Once he got to the door he leaned me up against the side of the house. He put his key in the lock and looked at me. “Um, if you are going to wretch, I rather you do it out here.”
“Oh, that was so polite Keith. Do you tell that to all the drunken girls you bring home?”
“I really wish you would get over yourself. You think you know so much?” He replied.
My thought process was still spinning, “Oh no, she’s not in there is she?” I asked with a horrified look on my face.
“Do you really think I’d be downtown picking up drunk exes at last call if she was here?” He asked.
“That’s true,” I agreed.
I sort of rolled/pushed myself off the door frame and stumbled through the open door into the foyer. He shut the door behind us.
