I think I'm in love!
Wow! Whoa! Fantastic! Incredible! Aussome! Surreal! Amazing!
We, hubby and two other female Urban virgins and me, arrived at Chapel Hill early in the afternoon. I was fidgety and nervous and fidgety and nervous some more. Being in the same area, same state, same city, breathing the same air, experiencing the same wind in our hair, separated only by the walls of a building and security personnel was about as much as I could take. I could feel his presence there, could visualize him doing the sound check, getting dressed for the BSE and concert, drinking his Fiji water and I was getting a little giddy with anticipation. To compound my excitement, I had been in contact with another poster, devney, and she had offered me the chance to see Keith in the front row. Although this arrangement was a little tentative at first, the anticipation of being that close to Keith was really quite overwhelming. This was the night that I had waited for, dreamed about, worried about, talked about for soooo long and it was just moments away.
Upon finding a parking place, I checked and double checked my gear: tickets, camera, lip gloss, cell phone, sharpie…and off we went to join the other monkeys that were already waiting impatiently in line. As we were walking around to our entrance we saw a man that definitely shared an amazing physical resemblance to Keith. He was dressed in a t-shirt and jeans, basically the same build, hair color and style as Keith but, I overhead his voice when he took a call from his phone and that cute Aussie accent was missing. Well, so much for Keith having a completely identical twin…LOL! While in line, I noticed all ages and both genders were there to see our guy: some children, some teens, twenty- somethings and thirty- somethings, and on and on…All coming together to see one man.
Finally, at 6:30 or so, the doors opened and we were allowed inside the venue. Hubby wanted to look around and check out the vendors but I had to find our seats first. I was now even closer to Keith; I was inside the same building where he was and my anxiousness soared. Eventually, hubby and I bought a few souvenirs and waited in line for the bathrooms. I couldn’t lose my Urban virginity with a full bladder. Can’t see Keith from the stall of the ladies bathroom and so I knew that was the last place I wanted to be when this concert got started! I found myself back in line for the bathroom again about 7:45; had to make sure my bladder and me were on the same page…LOL!
Our seats were not bad I thought to myself, row 25 on the floor. I slowly sat down and looked at the stage and thought about how Keith would soon be there so close to me and yet so far away at the same time. Suddenly, I realized that just about 10 feet away from me was the satellite stage that I had read about in so many reviews. I punched my husband’s arm and told him that Keith would be performing on that little stage as well. I remembered that Keith would be flying over to the stage and I slowly looked up. With excited eyes, I followed the path of the scaffolding that held the trapeze in place from the small stage to the main stage and then back again. I was getting more and more excited as each second passed and more and more nervous. I remember thinking that if my plan with devney didn’t pan out, I would still have a pretty good view from these seats. But if our plan to let me upgrade mine and hubby’s seats to the front became a reality, well, I tried not to get too excited just in case we hit a snag.
Trying to stay focused, I remembered my two friends way up in the balcony and I stood up and squinted to try to see them. With the lights and the incredible height distance separating us, they were out of my sight and much further away from Keith than I had originally imagined. I had told them if we got to move to the front then they could move down to our seats but only time would tell…We watched Natural Brown play a few songs and they were really good. Chris and Jerry both have great voices and play guitar really well. I was about to think that our chances of moving up were fizzling out but, during this opening performance, devney called. Hubby and I were moving up to the front row, right in front of the microphone stand, right on up where Keith would be standing and performing and where he would soon release me from the confines of my Urban virginity. Not only was he taking mine but hubby was losing his too right there beside me in a kind of beautiful, ritualistic ménage a trios. Oh and of course, my friends in the nosebleed section would be losing there’s in our original seats…All four of us were loving life!
So hubby and I got in our front seats and in just a few minutes the house lights went down and the crowd started to roar. I recognized Jerry and Chad and Chris and the guy on keyboards and then…I saw Keith. For a moment, I was like having trouble associating that this was reality and not a dream. The lights made him appear to glow and his eyes just sparkled like diamonds. Time almost seemed like it was going in slow motion and Keith’s skin and hair and arms were just so perfect that he almost appeared to be made of wax. I knew I couldn’t just stand there with my mouth gaping wide open and my eyes all bugged out so I made a conscious effort to clap and clap I did. But for probably the first 5 minutes, I intensely studied his clothes: the holes in his jeans that allowed a little bit of his knee to peek through, his dark blue t-shirt with a circular design of some kind hugging his body, his boots with their silvery, circular buckles all scuffed from riding his motorcycle and just general wear and tear…From there I noticed his arms and how their muscles kinda quivered when he played. I noticed the veins that ran from his upper arm to his elbow and how they filled up with blood and became more and more visible the harder he played. I saw that beautiful bird tattoo that I had only seen before in pictures. I noticed that he had a dark Wilson sweatband on his right wrist (which he ultimately threw to the crowd at the end of the night) instead of his usual wrist attire. I searched his other wrist and fingers for anything new or old for that matter but, I just saw skin. I wanted to look at his face harder and study it more intensely too but, I was so close to him that I was almost afraid that he would catch me starring at him looking like I had limited brain function and ask me was I alright…LOL! So I would sneak glances of his face: his mouth, his eyes, his hair which became increasingly damp as the night went on, his neck, his earrings dangling and that gosh darn beautiful scruff...
He eventually read some signs and chose the one of a young probably 20ish girl that said that she was upset that her sign wasn’t picked at his last concert in Richmond. She was obviously shaken by the whole experience. It appeared that she kept loosely mouthing “Oh my God’ nearly the whole time that she was up there with him. He picked right up on her nervousness and seemed to hug her even more. He kept snuggling up to her, adjusting and readjusting his arms and shoulders until they were about as close as they could get. He even had his leg thrown over her legs kinda like to hold her down. He made a comment about how he loved this girl or something to that effect. Keith finally released her and she seemed to walk off the stage still a little disoriented from it all. Ultimately, I chose not to carry a sign with me to this concert even knowing that my seats might be upgraded. I think being on stage and losing my Urban virginity could have proven to be too much for this one woman’s heart to handle for one night…LOL!
However, later in the show I had a change of heart about making a sign after devney’s daughter wrote one out on a piece of paper asking for a kiss and Keith got down on one knee and kissed her hand from the front of the stage right there beside me. I was inspired and prodded by my husband to make me one, too. I reached in my fanny pack and wrote on the back of my ticket “Teacher Needs A Kiss” and held it up slightly and sheepishly at best. It was really funny because everyone in the band seemed curious as to what I had written and would ease up closer to read my make shift sign and then kind of smirk. Keith finally read it while singing one of his songs and then laughed and grinned down at me. At me! He laughed and grinned down at me! And really, that was enough for me, ya’ll! After being discreetly acknowledged by Keith, I floated back inside my body and was able to enjoy the concert even more. And although I know he’s kicking himself today for not making a special effort to give me a kiss last night, it was probably for the best for both parties involved…LOL!
Another highlight of the night was when he put on a #23 Tarheel jersey and wore it around the stage for his last couple of songs. He couldn’t have been any cuter if he tried! He also commented a couple of times about the time and looked down at his invisible watch as he kept playing for about 2 hours and 15 minutes. He incorporated into one of his last songs that we were the best audience that he had ever played for and, although he may have said that to other audiences before, I kinda thought he may have been trying to makeup for not giving me that kiss…LOL!
I don’t remember all the songs that he sung nor would even guess at the order. I must have blacked out for a while during ROS because about the only thing I remember is Keith pretty much towering above my head, over the floor fan at the very edge of the stage and hair flying up and all around. I really liked it when he played Billy Joel’s “You May Be Right” and “The Joker” and he did play “Brand New Man”.
And can I just say that although Keith is obviously the main Monkey on that stage, all the other guys in the band are very talented also. But Chad, with his sweet smile and apparently new, shorter hairstyle, is about as cute as can be.
Well, this was my first concert review. I’m sure I was way too long winded and some stuff may have made sense only to me…LOL! I must say I am about as proud to be an Urbanite as I have ever been! And to devney, my husband and I just can’t seem to thank you enough…
