Subject: ShanBan do you barrel race?

As you can guess from my name I do Rodeo events. I compete in Barrel Racing, pole bending, stake bend, down and back, and dash for cash, all the speed events. I have a 22 year old barrel horse, shes really good and pretty fast for her age, and man can she run. Just wondering if you did any of that too?

Sarah

Unfortunatly I dont, I ride english, have been for 10 years, I'm really trying to get into all of the western events tho, I have always really loved them and I go to Rodeos all the time. The closet thing I have done to rodeo are the Jumpers events and then all the events at Gymkanas, like dollar bareback, egg and spoon, things of that sort. I have always wanted to barrel race tho, I just gotta find a place around me that teaches it.

I had wanted to do eventing, so I started to learn but the first bigger jump I did, I got off balance when my horse landed and sorta ended up partially laying on her neck. She bucked and I fell, and I landed on my head, and my helmet(Thank God I was wearing one) was cracked down the middle. O God if that had been my head. . . Ouch. So that freaked me out a bit, well actually a whole lot. So Im done with english. Besides western is easier. And I think its a lot more fun.

Yea if I could only count the number of times I fallen off.....definatly broken a few ribs and almost my back....but thats part of the sport, I feel like you not a good rider if you dont fall every now and then, if you dont fall your playing ti to safe.....

I was working on barrels and my horse got hott headed, and started bucking like crazy, I went flyin. I did a flip through the air and landed on my head, then my neck, and my back. I could not get up, I seriously thought I was paralized. Thank God I wasnt, I was alright, just a bit sore the next morning. I am no stranger to being thrown. My horse is a brat. A really big nasty brat.

Well I have had some super bad falls.....One time I was on a cross country ride and my horse went nuts, reared up and slammed me against a tree, then threw me backwards against it and then I landed on my back, this horse was 18 hands and I'm 4'10, broke 3 ribs on that one I think. Then I had a horse turn a corner and traip over its own feet, crashing down on top of me, and there was the time when I fell going down a steep hill over a jump and I flipped over the front landed on my head then got stepped on.....wow looking back at these I often wonder, why the hell am I still doing this lol!

Wow that would be really bad for me and Im 5'4" and pretty solid. But it would be worse for little you, gosh those really had to hurt. It makes mine sound so unserious. Unfortunatly barrel racing is just as dangerous. The horses are all hot headed, and its just really dangerous. Last year @ a rodeo, a horse fell going around a barrel and shattered its leg, it had to be put down. The rider was OK. Then @ another one, during a run a horses bridle was slipping off so the rider leaned foward to fix it, the horse threw her and kicked her in the head on her way down. She wasn't wearing a helmet. When I look @ those people I wonder why Im getting so into something that could easily kill me. And My answer to myself it because I love it. Just Love It.
