I was snapped back into reality by my ringing cell phone. It was Kim on the caller ID.
She giggled on the other end, “I can’t talk long. Just wanted to tell you that I’m Mrs. Chesney now.” I heard Kenny mumbling in the background and she hung up before I could lace into her.

I put down the phone exasperated. Keith put his hand on my shoulder. “We’ve go to be at the airport at 2, are you packed?” He asked. We were leaving that afternoon for Australia. I made a few final additions to my bag. Keith laughed as he saw the amount of clothes I was bringing, reminding me we were only going for the weekend. I asked him about the time zone difference again. I had to figure out when to take my birth control pills, not wanting to miss any doses in Australia. I gave instructions to the house sitter who would be watching the dogs and bid them each goodbye. I tried not to mention Kim and Kenny during the ride to the airport. I didn’t want to rehash the conversation about us getting married. I hadn’t even answered his question about him being husband material and I didn’t want to either.

I slept most of the plane flight there. Keith woke me up shortly before we made our descent so I could change my clothes and try to freshen up before meeting his parents. I nervously smoothed my clothes and tried to apply mascara, not an easy task with turbulence. The plane landed and we got into the car that would drive us out to the Urban household. I fidgeted with my nails and makeup the whole ride. Keith assured me I looked great but I was still nervous about meeting the folks.

His parents came out of the house as the car pulled up. They hugged him warmly and he made my introduction. His mum hugged me and his dad gave me a gentle handshake. His brother and sister-in-law came over a short time later. I marveled at how well they all got along. I chatted openly with his mom and sister-in-law while we prepared a meal. We had a nice evening outside talking and joking until very late. We finally went to bed and as I snuggled down next to Keith he whispered in the dark, “I told you they would like you.”
The next two days flew by. Keith showed me the sights of the farm where they used to live. We had a barbeque the last night we were in town. His parents invited their friends as did his brother. I sipped an Aussie beer on the patio while I watched a group of kids run around playing. Keith sidled up next to me, putting his arm around my waist. I put my head on his shoulder. “I like it here, I like your family, and I even like you a little” I said jokingly, giving him a little kiss.
“Good, I like you a little bit too.” He replied.
We excused ourselves from the party, having to get up early for our flight. In his room I raised my arms so he could slip my sundress over my head. I peeled his tee shirt off and unzipped his khaki pants. We made love quietly, as quiet as possible on a squeaky antique bed.

We said goodbye to his family and set off for the airport the next morning. I tried to think of what I was going to say to Kim when we got home. I wanted to be happy for them, but I was so afraid of it not working out. Keith reminded me that what was done was done and there was nothing we could do about it. The flight was long and when we got back to Nashville we fell into bed. The next morning I trekked over the Chesney household with Keith in tow. I had disguised it as a trip to Starbucks but we got lost along the way and somehow ended up at their house. Keith and Kenny went into the sports lounge to congratulate each other while I lectured Kim. It fell on deaf ears and she was so happy and glowing I couldn’t be mad for long.
She wanted to talk about other things. “So how was Oz?”
She kept looking at my hands in a weird way so I put them into my pockets.
“It was fun, his family was so nice.” I said.
“Did anything happen?” she asked expectantly.
“Not really, what do you mean?” I said confused.
“Nothing, I’m glad you had a good time. We are going to St. Johns for a few days. My cell phone works there so if anything happens call me.” She said.
“I think that ring is cutting off the blood flow to your brain Kim. You are not making any sense.” I said.

She smiled knowingly and shook her head. The boys returned from their apparent strategy meeting and I congratulated Kenny. As I hugged him I gripped the back of his neck before he let go and whispered, “Hurt her again and I swear I’ll cut your toes off.”

He laughed as he pulled away from me, “I guess I’ll behave, I might need to count to twenty.”

I told Kim to behave herself in the islands. She said she would and pulled the waistband of her jeans down a little to show me her birth control patch. “Thank god” I said as we left.

They spent the next week down there in the islands and Keith and I settled back into our Nashville life. I was only working three days a week and the rest of my time was spent with him before he had to go back out on the road. I was looking forward the time he would be recording and not traveling as much. Our time in the past few days had not been as much fun as normal because I wasn’t feeling good. I had been tired and really sick to my stomach no matter what I ate.

Finally I went to my doctor, fearing I had picked up a parasite from something I ate in Australia. I mentioned the recent trip to her as I already looked up potential parasites on the internet, recommending test to her. She smiled as she read the chart and reviewed my symptoms. “Any chance you are pregnant?”
“No”, I replied. “Well, I guess there is always a chance but I am very careful. I doubt it is that, I’m thinking it is a liver fluke.” I answered.

“Well, let’s do a pregnancy test just to be sure you are not.” She said.

I rolled my eyes as I tried to put a sample in the cup. This was such a waste of time. A parasite was eating me up and they think I’m just plain ‘ole knocked up. I was sure I would end up in a medical journal with this parasite.

I swung my feet back and forth and they dangled off the edge of the exam table. I tapped my fingers nervously as I waited for the test results. Finally the doctor came back in, “Well, it was as we suspected.”
“What? Is it a parasite? Is it a liver fluke?” I asked.
“No, you are pregnant.” She replied.
“That can’t be. Your test is wrong.” I said.
“We’ll send some blood off, but you had a strong positive, it’s very accurate.” She said.
“You can send off what ever you want, I know that I’m not pregnant.” I said as I put my clothes back on. She smiled and handed me a box of prenatal vitamins.
“Be sure to take these, eat well and get lots of rest.” She said.
I snatched the box from her and marched out of the exam room.

I drove furiously to the pharmacy and bought eight pregnancy tests. Eight was my lucky number. I called Kim from my cell phone; they had just come back from St. Johns a few days ago. “Kim, I’ve got to come over. Are you alone?”
“Yeah, Kenny had a meeting. What’s wrong?”
“We’ll see when I get there.” I replied.
I paid the confused looking clerk and took my boxes of fate with me. When I got to Kim’s house I told her the whole story about the doctor. She laughed and hugged me and said, “That is so great.”
“No it’s not great, and I’m not even sure it’s true. I am going to take every one of these tests and you are going to read them. I need a big glass of water.” I said.

Over the next hour I proceeded to drink a gallon of water and take eight pregnancy tests. Kim laid them all out on the kitchen counter in a row. Each one was positive in its own unique way. There were plus signs, very clear pink lines, and the most annoying electronic stick the blinked ‘pregnant’. I sat on stool in disbelieve. I must have miscounted the hours during our trip and not taken a pill on time. Kim tried to reassure me that this was a good thing and that she and Kenny had decided to try as well. She hugged me, “we can be fat together, and it will be fun.”
I had to smile; the image of those two with a baby was almost too much to take. Kenny returned to from his meeting and surveyed the science project in the kitchen. Kim quickly shook her head no before he could say anything, she pointed to me. He teased me, “oh my god, you’re carrying Keith Urban’s love child.” He pointed and poked my stomach, “have any idea how big you are going to get?”
I pushed him away gently and smiled. Despite my shock over the day’s events I was beginning to feel a strange excitement, a new energy. I needed to go home and tell Keith the news. I felt bad that his friends knew before him. Kim and Kenny both hugged me before I left and told me everything would be fine. I tried to believe them. When I got back to Keith’s house he was waiting for me. “What did the doctor say? Do you have a parasite?” He asked concerned.
“Yep, it is a parasite all right.” I replied.
“What are they going to do about it?” He asked.
“Well, she said that I need to take vitamins, eat well, get lots of rest and it will work it self out in about nine months.” I said.
He gave me a confused look.
