After several moments, that seemed like hours, of neither one of us speaking; I stood up. He kept looking at me with his sad, serious face.

I spoke sharply, “Judging by your silence I guess I know where I stand with you.”

I picked up my keys and the rest of my purse contents off the floor, he continued to stare.

“So you’re just going to let me walk out again, without a word?”

He bit his bottom lip nervously but still said nothing. I opened the door only half expecting him to stop me but he made no movement. I walked out, leaving the door open so the cold wind blew in.

I walked to my truck without hearing the door slam. I pulled out of the driveway and continued on down the road calmly. I was half dazed, tired and a little numb by now. I checked my cell phone, five missed calls from Kim. I hit redial as I pulled onto the freeway.

She answered, “Well I guess I know what you’ve been up to.”

I knew what she meant but had to ask, “Did you see the pics?”

“Yeah I saw them, on about five different internet sites and several people from work have called me. They published your entire name you know.”

I gulped, “So what do you think? Am I a home wrecker?”

“Uh, no. She never even claimed him as her boyfriend. You can’t break up two people who are just friends. You two looked awfully cozy yesterday at lunch; I guess that is why you sound so tired this morning.”

I took a deep breath and tried not to cry. I wished that was why I sounded so tired. I told her all about the reporter this morning and my fight with Keith and his silence as I left.

“Just let things cool off a little, you can work it out, just like you have in the past.”

I tried to believe her. Speaking about getting cozy, I asked her about Kenny. She was silent for a few seconds. “Well, you know he was with Renee a few days ago and we had a big fight. But we are going to work it out.” She was holding something back but I didn’t pry, I knew she was trying to protect me.

“I’m happy for you Kim, I really am.” I mustered up my sincerity. I promised to call her later and hung up. Just as I did the phone rang again. It was my good friend Bird. She started talking as soon as I answered.

“Do you even know how many women would give their right arm to be you in those pictures? I cannot even believe this. The pics are everywhere; I did a google search and found about fifty hits already.”

“Is this supposed to make me feel better, bird?” I asked.

“Give me a break KP, at lease you are not a dirty little secret anymore.” She replied.
“Are we supposed to feel sorry for you because you got caught lying in a hammock with Keith Urban? It’s not like either one of you are married right now.”

“You are right, I know. I’m really tired right now. I’ll call you later okay?” I replied

“Hang in there KP, at least you looked good in the pictures. I would just worry about what your mama is gonna say. If she is okay with it then don’t worry.” I thanked her and we said goodbye just as Feathers was beeping in on the other line. I answered, “I guess you saw them.”

She replied, “Well yeah I did.” Silence followed while she waited for me to speak.

“So, what should I do?” I asked.

“Maybe you could be more discrete with your activities. Could you have not snuggled on the couch just as well?” She told me not to stress too much and that it would be okay. I agreed and told her that I would call her later.

I was just pulling up to my house. I tried to call Tex but it went straight to voicemail. I guess she was busy with her own canoodling. I went into the house and saw the light on the answering machine blinking. I hit the erase button without listening to a single one. I let the dogs out and fed them. They sensed something was wrong and followed to the bathroom and waited while I took a shower. The remains of my broken bed were still scattered on the floor so I made my way to the guest room. The sheets still smelled like Keith and I buried my face into the pillow he had slept on. I slept uneasily again, replaying the scene from that morning in my head.

I was awoken around three by the doorbell ringing. Could it be Keith? No, I thought, he always knocks. I answered the door in my pajamas to find two surprised delivery men. The new bed, I had forgotten. I showed them to my room so they could remove the old bed. “What happened in here?” The younger of the two men asked. I looked down at the remains of bed, still thinking of the symbolism. “I wish I could put it into words.” I replied. They removed the broken bed and set up the brand new one that Keith had bought for me. It looked so shiny, new and perfect. I wished I could make everything that way again.

I made myself something to eat and tried to call Tex again. This time she answered. “Hey girl, saw you on Entertainment Tonight just now.”

“What! You are kidding!” I exclaimed.

“No, they talked about the pictures for about five seconds and said they would have more on the story tomorrow.” She informed me.

“Well that is just great, I thought I would only have to deal with the people who check those internet site frequently but now that it’s been on TV most people will know.” I sighed.

“Don’t worry too much KP, who cares what those people think. What did Keith say about it?” She asked. I went into the entire story of this mornings events. She told me it would all blow over, there is so much else for the press to talk about. “Anyway, no one is that surprised that Keith had some other secrets. At least what’s her name will be on her way out now” she offered.

It didn’t make me feel better. “I didn’t want to hurt anyone with this; I shouldn’t have gotten involved again. I ruined everything.”

“No you didn’t girl, the photographers ruined everything. Plus it’s not like you coerced him into coming over.”

“Your right, I know, I should listen to my friends.” I heard Chad murmuring in the background and we agreed to talk later. I hung up and got ready for work.

As I walked into my unit a few of the nurses looked up at me and stopped their conversations. I got a nasty look from one or two of them. I didn’t really care. I had earned a reputation already and now this just solidified it in their minds. They could think what they wanted; at least my friends still loved me. Around nine a delivery person approached the desk. He had a huge bouquet of flowers. I politely told him that flowers were not allowed in ICU rooms and that it would have to be delivered to the patient’s home.

He replied, “It’s not for a patient, it is for a staff member.” He read my name off the delivery invoice.

“That’s me”, I replied, “Why did you come out here so late?” I asked.

“This guy came in right before closing and said he would pay anything to have it delivered tonight. He gave me a hundred in cash and told me that a certain lady worked the night sift and it was very important she got these as soon a possible. He spent forever writing the card too.” I signed for the delivery and thanked him. I admired the huge bouquet of roses and removed the card. My supervisor suggested I take the bouquet into the staff lounge and I excused myself with the flowers in hand. I knew I would not keep such an obvious display.

I made my way down the hall to the medical floor. I passed several rooms until I found an elderly woman sitting alone by the window. I knocked and asked if it was okay that I came in. “Of course my dear, are you my nurse for tonight?”

“No ma’am. I just came to see if you would like some flowers.”

“Oh, such a nice bouquet. Who are they from?”

“Well, they are from me. But they are originally from Keith Urban.” I had noticed she had CMT on the television in her room.

“Surely you are kidding my dear.” She said.

“No, want to see the card.” I pulled in from my pocket.

“I can’t see very well so I will believe you.” She smiled and touched one of the flowers.

“Well, I hope you have a good night and please enjoy the flowers.” I started to walk out of the room. She called to me, “My dear, can I tell you something.” I turned back towards her, “of course you can.” I replied.

“Usually when a man sends flowers like this he is trying to get your attention. So either he did something very wrong and he is very sorry or he wants to show you how much you mean to him.”

“Well, he already has my attention so we can guess why he sent them.” I replied.

“If I could just tell you one more thing, don’t spend too much time being mad. It’s just not worth it.” She said.

I thanked her for her advice and said goodnight. I made my way back to my unit and the sneering looks of my coworkers. The card was poking me through my pocket. I couldn’t bring myself to read it. As I finished my shift and as I put my notes from the shift report into the paper shredder, I threw the card in too.

Okay either I've missed something or I've missed something...LOL! Chesneygirl says "AWWWW" and I say "Urghhh"? So, am I to believe that it's really over now? That no matter what Keith wrote on this note, you don't care because, it's really over? But the pictures just came out and for all intense and purposes to the general public, the romance has just begun. Not over, begun! I'm not sure this is the time that I would break it off nor if I would let a few pictures make the final decision about ending it all. Are you sure it's over? It doesn't feel over yet...
