I live in northern Westchester. Last night it hit me hard for the first time. I was driving to Queens and hit 96.7 on the car radio and got noise. I felt a sense of helplessness and rage. I then hit WREF but by the time I hit the Bronx it was dusk and the signal was fading fast. On the ride home for the first time ever, there was NOTHING. I tried Lite FM, but they played mostly disco crap. I could never put that on a preset.
A few years ago I had a wide selection of stations - 97.7 in Poughkeepsie (which died after about 25 years of oldies), B105 in Danbury, WWKB Buffalo (my favorite), and now Kool 96.7 - all gone. I listened to Kool for about ten years. I stopped listening to CBS FM about six or seven years ago when Joe McCoy started butchering it. I can't understand why Don K Reed didn't quit when they killed his Doo Wop Shop. Like a puppy dog he stayed and played Village People and Peter Frampton and other such drivel. I don't know how many "loyal listeners" could stomach Mickey Dolenz. He was the final nail in the coffin and his party was the death knell for the once mighty CBS FM.
Up here we have WLNA 1420am Peekskill which carries ABC's Timeless Classics format - good DJs, some 50's pop (Como, Bennett), a little doo wop, Lettermen, Englebert etc. Not bad, but not oldies and only a 20 mile range. I bought a cd recorder and transposed most my 45's albums and cassettes onto cd. I also enjoy Music Choice Solid Gold on Cablevision ch 825. So I can cope.
I was in my daughter's car last Saturday and caught Norm and Brucie on Sirius. I guess that's next for me.
Free radio is now just news and sports. I officially threw in the towel last night. The era of oldies radio and boss jocks is over. If you want it, you have to pay for it. I see a short life for B103 on the Island. Don't hold your breath waiting for a new station. Even if you do get one, it will be run by clueless young suits and won't last long. You are on your own. Good luck and God bless.

Charlie Mac
