Have refrained from this thread just because it is hard to put truly any of what Bill has meant to us over the years into any words of value.
But a quick story about Bill I'm not sure any of you know, and it happened about a week prior to his accident. He loads up a bunch of wood for me after one of his jobs so I have some good kindling for some fires at casa Park Ave -- Bill knowing full well that fires only enhance the experience with the ladies (when combined with good smoke, wine and tunes of course). A huge favor to me and something he had promised for several weeks. He arrives late morning and we lug a bunch of wood up all three flights of stairs, stack it all, and then proceed to get stoned to the bejesus belt before trecking out for some payback grub.
Of course Bill enjoyed the local color (and flavors) of the ever strange Mt. Vernon scene and he had loads of visuals to keep him laughing (despite it being only lunch time so he missed the exciting evening crowd).
After a couple of beers he decides to order several apps as well as a huge jumbalaya seafood thing (after much proding to get anything he would like as payment for the free wood and labor). The bartender even questioned how much he was ordering and asked Bill twice if he knew how much food he was going to get (assuming his stomach was sized to match his height). Bill smiled (remember we were well lit), and said just bring me the first course ASAP. Well.....he proceeded to eat every bite. I mean everything. One large app, some soup, the huge fish dish and he even order some after lunch shots to "finish off a great meal." It was classic Bill. He ate enough for two guys, jumped up from the stool and said lets hurry back for some tasty chasers.
One week later (after I returned from a business trip), he was gone.
Generous to a fault (wouldn't let me pay him for the wood, and fought me about the lunch tab although I won), strong as an ox (carried twice as much wood up the stairs as I did and I was trying to compete as you would guess) and funny as shit (we laughed before, during and well after the wood). Also true to his word, clear about his opinions, and one rightous amigo to spend any day with. Couldn't help but have fun if he was involved. Miss him to this day. His laugh and his attitudes. Think of him to this day every time I light up a fire -- anytime, anyplace.
#9 forever. He is part of all of us, and forever the leader of our league. His name was first on the trophy, and will be the last. It's how it should and will be.
Let's have another bonefire, the anniversary is approaching. I have a firepit, lets go!
