Bill was a kind-hearted friend for sure.
He was a gracious host, and had a passion for life that we all admired and still do.
He gave 110% to whatever he did. well, maybe not school. work, yes. playing sports, yes. partying, yes. not sure how he ate pussy, but I'm sure it was with vigor.
Like many perfectionists, he was his own worst critic, and was sometimes too hard on himself if he didn't live up to or exceed his own expectations.
He wasn't afraid to be heard. Shot from the hip. Didn't care how people received it. If it was right to him, fuck everybody else.
He had the ability to laugh and made us all laugh. He had a great laugh. even better smile.
his comb was one of his best friends. never met a mirror he didn't like. chet yelling at him as we waited patiently in his living room, "Lil D, if you don't get down here soon, Christopher's will be fuckin' closed."
He worked hard, and partied even harder. The ultimate tribute to living life to its' fullest.
Let's be honest, he never envisioned what happened actually happening. He planned to live long, but I am not so sure he was short-changed in his life. He got every last drop out of it while he was here.
The stories have been told many times before, and for at least this one time of the year, they are worth documenting once again.
- partying with him at his folks' deep dale residence was very cool. I didn't go to Dulaney, but he welcomed me in. came home from UM-College Park and showed him handstand bong hits. he & i did them one after another in the upstairs hallway. Paul came home from being out. "What the hell are you guys doing ?" As he tried and failed each time, Bill encouraged him by yelling, "come on, fat shit, do a handstand." once paul started laughing at Bill's chiding, there was no way it was happening. we were in tears.
- playing hoops at Pinewood outdoor courts, playing football at Pinewood, playing lob pitch baseball at Pinewood. simply great fun during our teen years.
- Showing up at Towsontowne for Brats - Saturday practices at 1PM. Bill sleeping on the bench, waiting for us to show up. Practice til 3, head back to his house or our apartments to do b-hits & drink beers, call out for food at 6, shower & head out or watch the game that evening. Next Saturday, repeat all over.
-Last Friday DH of the Summer Season for the CVP Eagles. Sat in a booth in our uniforms as other teammates left one-by-one. Mike Diventi of the Wooden & Benson team, Bill, and me. 1:20AM. "Another Pitcher ?" Bill, "I have to work early in the morning." "That's cool, let's settle up and go crush a bowl in the parking lot before we head home." Bill, "Fuck It, life's too short, what's 20 more minutes gonna hurt, order another pitcher up, Oz." Left after last call around 2AM, and still nailed that bowl. He had to be at work at 5AM. I slept until 2PM on Saturday afternoon.
-the Super Bowl parties at Chet's and the one memorable super bowl bash where starsky & bill's girl left to get more beer. an hour later, bill pacing at the end of chet's yard, ready to kill. starsky may have gotten more than 2 30-packs that afternoon, shear speculation. when she returned, bill lit her up.
-partying in chet's attic at the super bowl party after bill passed, only to find Bill's black vial with the lime green lid, in the rafters of the beams. great find, great green bud, post mortum.
- If he didn't know his last 6 months were his last 6 months, it sure didn't show:
-went to Ohio for his friend, Teddy's wedding (which they protested), with Coulson, and went to the Football HOF in Canton on the return trip. In the gift shop, he demanded a Baltimore Colts item. The lady went in the back, rooted around for 20 minutes, and emerged with a Baltimore Colts T-Shirt which she gave him.
-the last tailgate that fall, MD-Clemson on the VA parking lot below Memorial Stadium. Bill & Rob threw it, Bill reveled in it. Thursday Night before, went to the Giant to get chicken drumsticks, a 20- pack. Cost, $ 7.44. Got home, lathered them in sauce, didn't think he had enough. Decided to go back to Super Fresh to see their selection, secure another 20-pack. Cost, $ 7.44. Hmmm, coincidence. Went to Hill's Liquors got some beer and two lottery tickets, 7-4-4 straight and boxed for $ .50. Friday's Daily Number, 7-4-4. $ 440 to the winner. He showed me his bundle laughing on the tailgate lot, and thought he was the smartest guy on the planet. who was I to argue.
- after returning from canton, bill came over to watch MNF at Dave & my apartment. Dave was working late at Hudson Trail, Bill was dry and needed a friend in weed. I was holding and glad to oblige. Sat in the dark, with only the tv and lighters providing any light, as we polished off round after round of hits. Dave came home, "what the fuck, turn some lights on." Bill, dryly replied, "shut the fuck up, and sit down and do one, what did you have a baaaad day at work ?" Dave could only laugh. Bengals over Browns at Cleveland Stadium, 34-13. Bill's Breakers move into sole possession of 1st place in Fantasy Football.
- 5 days later, I stood in the kitchen of the same apartment while getting ready to take Jeanne to dinner at my parents house to introduce them for the 1st time, and got the call from Paul, for Dave & I to come to Shock Trauma. Unthinkable.
The silver lining, if there is one. 12 people benefited from his vital organs, the heart recipient, kidneys, liver, and two eyes who benefited a blind girl in florida. Gone but still not forgotten, by us and many others. Including that young lady in florida who is probably forever thankful, of the life she experiences on a daily basis.
bonfire, shots at his gravesite. I'll be doing each as I do each year. The more the merrier.
might not say it, but I love and cherish my friends every day. Bill probably left that to me, and I am forever grateful for having known him during his time here.
# 9. one of a kind.
