Subject: And thus it begins...

There is a soft hum from one of the Portals that rest within the edges of the Den, and a moment later a tall ebony figure has finished his leap to the bloody soil. He closes his eyes as his paws press harshly into the earth -- this action the briefest glimpse of frustration that he would allow himself to show -- then lifts his muzzle back into the dim light. He silently pads his way over to one of the fallen borders with a semi-flattened top, leaping to it's surface without so much as a scrabble for balance. The rock hums slightly beneath him, and he is aware of its pressing against the energized wall. The sensation is somewhat comforting.

He flicks up an ear at a sound from farther back within the Cavern, dimmed burgundy daze immediately flashing over to an alert crimson. A quick inhalation tells him that the being is familiar, and the Korat settles into all the comfort of a tense crouch, blade arched outward.

His mind wanders back to the day's prior events. The trip to Lavana had been dissapointing, the Madren and the Kana -- though helpful in their agreement to spread word of the Renegades' goal -- refused to lend physical aid to such a youthful 'leader'. True, he had yet to attain Mastery, but his skills were commendable, and his cause was just...

"Your cause is hopeless, cub," the eldest Night Cat had murmured, her gaze sympathetic but firm. "We cannot spare any of our own to this suicide mission when Lavana suffers crises of her own." The others had been in agreement, and Redan had been forced to leave with nothing more than their words of pity and disbelief still ringing in his ears.

The rock vibrates beneath him as his temper flares more strongly at this detailed recollection, but he allows himself to draw into the emotion, relishing the sudden burst of golden-orange energy that courses through his limbs. His tail twitches once behind him, a spark of gold connecting from the deadly tip to the stone itself in a shock of light. Redan's teeth are bared as his fur ripples up and back, the bristled beginnings of a rebel-mane standing straight up along his neck.

Then he breathes, releases the energy back into the earth, and is calm.

A dark eye surveys the Den once more, recognizing now the incredibly limited amount of resources at their disposal. Water was availible, if barely, but food... The black shakes his head in slight disbelief that he'd actually taken so long to recognize that need. The idea of providing for so many others was such a new one to him, a lone hunter who killed only when his gut demanded the sustenance. How did Shula become so accustomed to it? Redan sighs slightly at the thought of his brother, then leaps back through the portal from whence he came.

An hour later and the black has returned, the carcass of a grown male Preda Ben dragged between his jaws. He leaves the kill under the overhang of a fallen piece of metal where the breeze continually blows -- thus the coldest location within the Caverns -- and returns to his perch.
