It has nothing to do with taking up bus space so much as it has to do with the bus route. Where your child is in the private school sector you may be missing this but, the bus routes this year are terribly long and confusing. We have children consistantly late to school and late getting home. Now that's not all due to the busing of private school children however, some of it may be alleviated by the discontinuance of that practice. And in so far as taxes go, yes we all pay our taxes. And to those senior citizens who continue to pay them without the benefit of a child/children in our schools, my time will come as well as will all of us who currently have children in the school system. The children grow up and others follow. When you had children in the system that's the way it worked for you. My point here is that we don't disassemble our taxes by what we use and don't use. I do not call the fire department every day yet my taxes pay for their salaries and equipment as they should. You can't throw the I pay my taxes so I have the right arguement at me it doesn't fly because you would then have to apply that arguement to every service in town. Do you live on an approved street? I don't, and my street is over 30 years old. It's in such disrepair that driving down it puts your vehicle in jeopardy. I pay my taxes why can't I get street repairs like everyone else-we're then told-it's not budgeted! (Of course this is going to open a whole unaccepted street argument which I hope to avoid--this was an example.) The point being-we all pay our taxes for services we use and don't use. The thing is, you can't complain about a public bus service getting your private school child around on time when you made the choice to go to the private school. You can't argue that you pay your taxes so you have the right because you're actually saving us money. It doesn't work that way. At this point unfortunately, we will have to agree to disagree. This has been an ongoing arguement that probably will never change.
