Well ML. I do agree with one thing, Colleen Garry is crackers. Other than that I am in total disagreement.

I will stipulate that many in the mental health community assert that addictions of various stripes are “diseases” I think this has more to do with reimbursable insurance coverage for their services rather than a clinical or medical finding.

All behaviors have some level of physiological manifestations. If I am out in the sun there are a host of body chemical changes taking place. Is being in the sun a disease? If someone cuts me off at the Methuen rotary and I get an adrenaline rush am I now suffering from an illness? Is pregnancy a medical ailment?

The most successful treatment modality for alcoholism, at virtually no cost, is Alcoholics Anonymous. It is purely a behavior modification program. There are no medications, no surgery, no medical interventions whatsoever. Its success relies solely on teaching new behavior. Try doing that with hepatitis or Lupus.

And yes, being a philanderer has been touted as a disease. Based on your own definition, you would have to accept that. Surely you realize and understand the multitude of chemical reactions and changes that occur when males contemplate a physical liaison with a female. I’m interested though, why would you be so dismissive of categorizing that as a disease but sign on whole-heatedly to the disease of Powerball? Perhaps because it competes with your core values? Yeah, me too.

And doesn’t it seem just a little convoluted for the State to sponsor a lottery program knowing full well of its disease properties? If compulsive gambling is a disease, why isn’t the Dept of Public Health suing the Lottery to recover costs of treating these afflicted souls in much the same way they sued the Tobacco companies?

Finally, speaking specifically of the alcoholic and the burden their families bear, will a higher cost for the substance truly affect the addict? Or will it further victimize his/her family by removing that much more income from the household?

Colleen Garry has not “served” her constituents she has served her own purposes. You take alcohol out of the Dracut Economy & exactly what are you left with? Serving your district means looking out for their interests. A new tax on alcohol when a bordering state has no such tax puts those constituents who own a business involving the sale of alcohol at a distinct disadvantage. Is putting the merchants in your district out a business a means of serving them?
