Naturally, you add alot to this board by posting your opinions and your witty scribblings, but please remember to do your research.

You said "First, what is this trend in society where we assign a medical pathology to what is clearly a behavioral issue. Expanding the definition of “disease” to encompass drug addiction, degenerate gambling, and being a philanderer . . . . ."

I don't know about the philanderer thing, but addiction IS a medical condition. The only thing I can think of, when folks go spouting off about how things are "behavioral" and so forth, is that they have never gone through an addiction or have been close to someone who has. Funny how those experiences make you do your homework. As far as gambling, here is a current reference that puts your assertion completely aside:

"Study Finds Gambling Has Similar Effects on Brain as Some Drugs"

http://more.abcnews.go.com/sections/living/dailynews/gambling_010525.html

Something that changes the brain chemistry IS a medical problem, not a behavioral one. To your credit, you did not equate tobacco usage in your posting. That's an addiction too. No one gets involved in any kind of mind/mood altering substance with the INTENT of getting addicted. Not every one who smokes, drinks or whatever will get addicted. It all depends upon the particular person and all the variables that go along with that. One the brain/body chemistry is altered by the addictive substance, some people have a harder time giving it up. The point is that it is medically treatable.

As far as the lottery goes, it should be funding gambling addiction programs. Would you oppose that as well? I think Colleen G has alot of crackers to support something she obviously believes in and that she must know would not be popular in the border towns that she serves.
