Mark, I think you should absolutely find yourself a nice home in Dracut and buy it as soon as you can. With your litany of complaints, you belong here, no doubt about that. If possible, try to buy on Forest Park Rd. Then you’ll be able to crank about the grinder pumps too. The day after Thanksgiving when it burns out from being overloaded with post-consumer material, you can rail and whine and know that you really have come home again!

A Taco-Bell would really dress up the place. Chalupa wrappers decorating the sidewalks. The purple & white façade of this fine culinary establishment would certainly lend an aesthetic improvement to the town. It would be a good start to the garish carbon-copy franchised landscape that seems to be your ideal. Certainly it would be far better to swap local eateries like Lo-Kai, The Village Inn and The Mill House, which are owned and operated by local business people, for some nameless faceless chain restaurant that answers to a regional office in Holyoke. I’m sure they will have the same commitment to the community. Do you think Bertucci’s would lay out a huge spread for the Navy band that recently played at the quarry? The guy who owns Scola’s did and he did it on his own dime. You probably didn’t hear about it because he did it quietly, out of a sense of generosity for his community.

Certainly the temporary classrooms are not anyone’s vision of the ideal educational environment. Despite this you would be hard pressed to find a better school system in the Merrimack Valley. There is always room for improvement, but by and large the schools do quite well by our kids in town. Maybe my values are screwed-up but I won’t lose sleep over our lack of a Jumbo-Tron at a High school football field. I go to some of the games and I can tell whose winning. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the function of a scoreboard!

Don’t get me wrong, you are entitled to your criteria for where you want to live. After all this is America. Just plan to save a few more bucks because what you want is available in Andover and Lincoln. For about 150,000 additional dollars you can have plush soccer fields and spanking new bleachers. If that’s what blows you hair back then go for it.

Me? I like Dracut for its lack of franchised establishments. I’ll take Aldens over Walmart and day and twice on Sundays.
