Event Horizon isn't one of the greats either!
Incidentally, I had this kind of discussion with someone about war films and they had some shocking choices, but that was mainly due to the fact that they hadn't really watched many films.
I suspect the films on your list (plus star wars) are probably the only Sci-Fi films most people on here have ever watched...
You have to also consider:
The Day The Earth Caught Fire, Soylent Green, Things to come, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Brazil, Sleeper, Dark Star, Westworld (better and earlier than Jurassic Park), Planet of the Apes, plus who knows how many others...
P.S. Personally, if someone suggests The Matrix or any of the sequels, we need to have a long chat about how shit these movies are as serious contenders. Sure, they are great rollercoaster movies, but as much as I enjoyed them, they are fluff.
