Correctional Officer Exposes Himself at Target
February 1, 2008 - 6:11am

A Frederick County Sheriff's Office correctional officer was arrested Saturday after he exposed himself in the parking lot of Target on Urbana Pike, the sheriff's office reported Wednesday.

Mark A. Baziuk, 30, of Frederick, was charged with indecent exposure after a store employee saw him exposing himself about 4:15 p.m. while he was sitting in his truck in the parking lot, the sheriff's office reported earlier this week. Deputies did not mention Baziuk was a correctional officer in the initial press release.

Baziuk graduated with the 22nd class of the Frederick County Criminal Justice Training Academy in 2004. Since his arrest, he has been on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation, spokeswoman Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said Wednesday.

Gotta Love it -- R&R, 11:25:56 03/14/08 Fri
A bloody fraternity of the state’s most monstrous killer cons are plotting their releases from prison as part of a Department of Correction-sanctioned club whose aim is to shorten its members’ lengthy sentences.

Groomed by two men who murdered their own wives and children, dozens of lifers recognized by the state as the nonprofit Lifers’ Group Inc. convene twice a month at MCI-Norfolk and - according to minutes of their meetings obtained by the Herald - have focused in the last year on:

• Lobbying outside support for abolishing life without parole.

• Starting a Toastmasters club.

• Discussing the biographies of the Parole Board’s seven members.

• Charity work, including a Walk for Hunger in their exercise yard to benefit Project Bread.

Judith Hartnett’s 21-year-old daughter Tara Hartnett was killed by Lifers’ Group Inc. director James Cyr in 1993. Convicted of first-degree murder for repeatedly stabbing the mother of his baby, then setting her ablaze after soaking her with gasoline, Cyr is not eligible for parole.

“Give them an inch, they take a yard,” railed Hartnett, 56, of South Boston. “He doesn’t deserve to live after what he did to my daughter, let alone be free.”

Parole for first-degree murder “is never going to happen,” she believes, “and if it does, (Cyr) will have me to contend with.”

Michael O’Keefe, president of the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association, wonders, “Would they prefer that we go back to the death penalty? Perhaps that could be an agenda item for their next meeting.

“I would suggest there’s no appetite for taking life without parole out of the equation,” the Cape and Islands DA said, “either in the Legislature or the public.”

State Parole Board Chairwoman Maureen Walsh would not comment.

Massachusetts Department of Correction Commissioner Harold W. Clarke released the following statement: “The MCI-Norfolk Lifers Group Inc. has existed since the early 1970s. It is one of many inmate support groups permitted by the Department of Correction. The group has a governing body led by a chairman and it meets twice monthly.”

That chairman is Gordon Haas, a former department store manager who on June 26, 1973, smothered his pregnant wife, Shirley, and toddler son and daughter with plastic bags in their Ipswich home.

Haas’ secretary is Kenneth Seguin, a computer software executive from Holliston who on April 28, 1992, drugged his son and daughter and slit their throats, heaved them in a pond, then went home and split open his wife Mary Ann’s head with an ax.

Seguin was convicted of second-degree murder and is serving three consecutive life sentences, but one day will be eligible for parole. He was given the lesser sentence after his defense attorney argued Seguin was mentally ill at the time of the killings.

Time may not be on the lifers’ sides, but occasionally they see light at the end of their tunnel. By a 5-1 vote, Edgar Bowser III, who serves on Lifers’ Group Inc.’s board of directors, was granted parole in December from his sentence for murdering Shrewsbury police officer James Lonchiadis in 1975. Bowser will be released later this year.

On Jan. 17, 2007, Bowser gave his behind-bars brethren a report on “the physical layout of the Parole Board hearing, where everyone sits and how restraints are used,” according to minutes from that meeting, attended by 72 members.

Lifers found encouraging that former cop Mark Conrad, nominated to the Parole Board by Gov. Deval Patrick, was confirmed by a 5-3 vote of the Governor’s Council, declaring in minutes from their June 19 meeting, “The vote shows that the loud cry to stop making the board a criminal justice only board is being heard.”

But Kurt Schwartz, Patrick’s undersecretary in the Executive Office of Public Safety, said, “We support the sentence of life without parole for first-degree murder. We would oppose any efforts to change that sentence.”

Dear fellow Brothers and Sisters of the MA DOC and HOC,

This is to inform you of the formation of the “Hurt In The Line Of Duty” (HITLOD) support group. HITLOD was created out of the dyer need to learn and share information about the I.A. system, your Healthcare treatment and your over all Rights. HITLOD was created by and for those who are affected by it. We are mostly Unit 4 members and we’re not asking for handouts BUT we do need and want your support.
* You can help by signing up on our emailing list and pass this message on.

The following are some basic RIGHTS and first steps to take when HURT IN THE LINE OF DUTY…
*If you were injured in the line of duty seek medical help for real serious injuries get to an ER for treatment and if able let your Boss and Union know you got hurt a.s.a.p..
* No matter who first helps you medically follow up immediately with your Primary Care Physician (PCP). Explain exactly what happen and list all of your injuries no matter how trivial.
*Most important do not let your PCP farm you out to any outside overall healthcare providers i.e. a workman’s comp clinics also known as “occupational health clinics” of any type without a clear understanding of your Rights.
*The only healthcare providers you should be seeing outside your PCP are specialists referred by your PCP for your specific injuries and or those you choose to see. Note; you could be ordered by the boss/system to see their doctors but you still have rights.

Sincerely,
HITLOD

Four Men Framed By FBI Awarded $101 Million After Decades In Prison For Murder They Did Not Commit
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS — A federal judge Thursday ordered the government to pay more than $101 million in the case of four men who spent decades in prison for a 1965 murder they didn’t commit after the FBI withheld evidence of their innocence.

The FBI encouraged perjury, helped frame the four men and withheld for more than three decades information that could have cleared them, U.S. District Judge Nancy Gertner said in issuing her ruling Thursday.

She called the government’s argument that the FBI had no duty to get involved in the state case “absurd.”

Peter Limone, Joseph Salvati and the families of the two other men who died in prison had sued the federal government for malicious prosecution.

They argued that Boston FBI agents knew mob hitman Joseph “the Animal” Barboza lied when he named the men as killers in the 1965 death of Edward Deegan. They said Barboza was protecting a fellow FBI informant, Vincent “Jimmy” Flemmi, who was involved.

The four men convicted on Barboza’s lies were treated as “acceptable collateral damage” because the FBI’s priority at the time was taking down the Mafia, their attorneys said.
Don’t Miss

A Justice Department lawyer had argued that federal authorities couldn’t be held responsible for the results of a state prosecution and had no duty to share information with the officials who prosecuted Limone, Salvati, Henry Tameleo and Louis Greco.

“The FBI’s misconduct was clearly the sole cause of this conviction,” the judge said Thursday. “The government’s position is, in a word, absurd.”

“No lost liberty is dispensable. We have fought wars over this principle. We are still fighting these wars,” Gertner told the packed courtroom.

Salvati and Limone were exonerated in 2001 after FBI memos dating back to the Deegan case surfaced, showing the men had been framed by Barboza. The memos were made public during a Justice Department task force probe of the FBI’s relationship with gangsters and FBI informants James “Whitey” Bulger and Stephen “the Rifleman” Flemmi.

Limone, now 73, and Salvati, 75, stared straight ahead as the judge announced her ruling. A gasp could be heard from the area where their friends and family were sitting when Gertner said how much the government would be forced to pay.

The men’s attorneys had not asked for a specific amount in damages, but in court documents they cited other wrongful conviction cases in which $1 million was awarded for every year of imprisonment. Gertner ordered the government to pay $101.7 million.

“Do I want the money? Yes, I want my children, my grandchildren to have things I didn’t have, but nothing can compensate for what they’ve done,” Salvati said.

Salvati had been sentenced to life in prison as an accessory to murder and served more than 29 years before his sentence was commuted in 1997.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Limone, who served 33 years in prison before he was freed in 2001. “What I’ve been through — I hope it never happens to anyone else.”

Justice Department attorney Bridget Bailey Lipscomb declined immediate comment on the ruling.

Dear MOCOFU Members:

After you read the most recent proposal agreement for the contract that expands beyond the normal 36 month period to 42 mos this is what they are offering:

You take your base salary (and the proposal does not say anything about the use of overtime –and its hardly relevant anyway) e.g. Sgt step 7 @ $28.11/hr x .08 or (8%) for (9) mos and you get $3386.88. Add the $3,000 “bonus” (it is anything but a bonus more like a carrot) and you get $6386.88 as the increase over FORTYTWO MONTHS. This represents a 3,3% (you divide your total compensation e.g. $188,918.52 into the $6386.88 to get the percentage increase) increase. It is a mistake to take into account the proposed 3% that takes effect July, 8 2007. Yes ladies and gentlemen they got the language they wanted too. You might argue that we are at an impass. Well I don’t think an arbitrator would do any worse. Going down the middle we would do better at arbritration. Please tell your stewards no. Vote NO.

Good Bye Mother Love or should I say Hippocrate !!! I was there at the creation of the core value lie fest.
Your current situation should teach you to treat staff with respect and back them unless their action was so egregious you can't justify it. Because it is these very people (CO's and CPO's alike) that are there every day doing their jobs, doing the right thing. Yet since you took over, you showed such wanton disregard for staff (especially CO's) and in turn created Chaos in the institutions and distracted everyone from the job at hand
"managing and housing INMATES".
So you finally got caught in the web of your own deceit, of course not against staff, but against the very group you hugged (remember your motto "hug not lug a thug").
Gee, soon to be EX-Commissioner doesn't sound like Responsible, Respectful, Honest and Caring to me.
The Globes excerpt --"She's saying they made a decision not even to say anything because they didn't think that I would be intelligent enough to understand. (lying to inmates-you should be in the naughty chair).
Remember Kathy to manage is to lead not to demean, de-moralize and humiliate those beneath you (line staff). For those are the one's that do the job.

Well I've vented long enough and will sleep better tonight knowing soon you won't be at the helm. Good luck to all staff and stay safe...........................

INTERNET DATE ALLEGEDLY DEFRAUDS ONE BOSTON GAY DOCTOR OF TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, RESULTS IN MEDICAL LICENSE SUSPENSION, JOB LOSS, DIGNITY; TRIGGERS NIGHTMARE LEGAL PROCESS; OTHERS FALL FOR SAME CON

Next
On the night of April 25, 2005, Joseph E. Kalinowski logged into his Manhunt.net account and searched for a potential partner. One of the best-looking options was "Aaron Snyder," who said he was a doctor, lawyer, member of a secret black ops military unit fresh from Iraq, steer wrangler, police officer, and the heir to a family fortune.

He was looking to chat with cool guys, go out on dates, and would consider no-strings-attached sex - "Nature does call now and then," reads his profile - but what he wanted more than anything else was a life partner, the same as Kalinowski.

But this was not true. Snyder exists only in cyberspace. His real name is Zachary Hildreth. Hildreth is none of these things.

There were five pictures attached to the profile. The faces in the photos were either blacked out or cropped out, which kept Kalinowski from realizing that the men in the pictures and the man at the other end of the Internet connection were not the same.

He was also not, as he described in his profile, 35, 6'3", 210 pounds. Hildreth is actually 43, according to court records from Mass. Attorney General Thomas Reilly's office, and is 6'1", and 230 pounds, according to Kalinowski.

During a two-hour exclusive interview with In Newsweekly, Kalinowski, 42, repeatedly admitted the warning signs were there had he only been more aware. He believes, today, that Hildreth only acted the part of a gay man to swindle him out of tens of thousands of dollars. The fact that Hildreth didn't look much like his pictures didn't matter much to Kalinowski since Hildreth knew how to play the part.

From the beginning, words didn't match actualities

"When he came over for our first date, he walked into my home and kissed me on the mouth," described Kalinowski. "He wasn't as good-looking in person as he was in his pictures, but I just thought the pictures were older than he had said and that he had put on a few extra pounds. It wasn't that big of a deal, really."

The two men started casually dating and then more seriously. Ultimately, Hildreth moved into Kalinowski's home, who never questioned why Hildreth never paid for anything. They were laying the groundwork for a future together including having children. Another of Hildreth's promises included the use of eggs extracted from a former model and frozen for Hildreth to one day fertilize.

Kalinowski said he discovered after their relationship ended last year that nothing Hildreth said was true. But that's what he does, says Kalinowski, Hildreth tells people what they want to hear in order to get what he wants, and what he wants more than anything is money. Lots and lots of money. But he has a history of doing it illegally.

Of the last 19 years, Hildreth has spent 12 in correctional institutions. The first time was in 1987 when he was 24. He was charged with 11 counts of felony larceny, stemming from what prosecutors called a plan to steal more than $500,000 from six investors in a Web-based company. He was calling himself "Tex" at the time. And according to Dedham Superior Court records, in September 2002, Hildreth was sentenced to three years in state prison for stealing $179,645 from three "clients" in 1997 while posing as a Web site designer. He was later released on parole a few weeks before meeting Kalinowski.

Richard Rand, a private investigator Kalinowski hired to investigate Hildreth, discovered this. Rand also discovered the names of other men Hildreth has conned, including two with whom Hildreth became "involved" in 1997. According to the alleged victims, who this week spoke separately to In Newsweekly on the condition of anonymity, Hildreth stole money from both, charged $70,000 in purchases with one of their credit cards, and when confronted about it Hildreth turned violent and abusive. After the relationships ended, one of the men said he went door-to-door in the South End looking for other victims. He says he found seven others.

In bizarre twist, Hildreth takes Kalinowski to court

These two men are testifying on behalf of Kalinowski when a criminal case brought against him by Hildreth begins on Dec. 7.

That's right, Hildreth is suing Kalinowski.

Hildreth mounted a legal challenge against Kalinowski before Kalinowski knew what was coming.

Hildreth is accusing Kalinowski of, among other things, pushing him down a flight of stairs and raping him. Hildreth wants damages in the amount of $450,000. Kalinowski declined to talk on the record about what will form the crux of his defense. Similarly, Norfolk District Attorney William R. Keating, whose office is representing Hildreth's interests in the criminal case, would not comment on ongoing legal proceedings, said David Traub, spokesman for Keating's office.

Kalinowski is waiting for the first trial to conclude before considering any counter suit.

Repercussions for gay cruisers

Kalinowski still has trouble sleeping through the night, he said. He hasn't dated anyone since Hildreth and has cancelled his memberships to Manhunt.net and Gay.com. He wishes they did more policing of member identities but acknowledges the difficulty in doing so. Manhunt.net Director of Marketing Phil Hendricks separately agreed that policing the identities of the Web site's users would be impossible.

"One of our strongest features is the anonymity of the site. There are many married members and closeted members and members in 'monogamous' relationships," said Hendricks during a telephone interview. "The fact that you can do this with anonymity is something that the overwhelming majority of our members appreciate."

Signing up for Manhunt (and even Gay.com) doesn't require much more than an e-mail address and a photograph, both of which are easy to fake.

What Manhunt, and by extension Hendricks, recommends is that when letting someone in your house "it's always wise to be cautious."

Hendricks offers advice on how to do that. "And one of the things we encourage our members to do is let us know [when incidents like this] happen, because our members definitely help us police the site," said Hendricks. "Without them, there probably would be a lot more unfortunate activity on the site."

Kalinowski did complain, and though the profile was taken down from both sites for a while, it was soon back up.

"I'm not angry anymore," said Kalinowski, despite having his medical license suspended by the state Board of Registration in medicine and reading a scathing report about his relationship in the Patriot Ledger. Kalinowski denies the accusations saying he acted in self defense.

"Weymouth doctor Joseph E. Kalinowski was allegedly obsessed with space aliens, drank heavily and pumped himself full of human growth hormone to fight infection and aging," wrote Patriot Ledger reporter Dennis Tatz. "Now he faces charges that he nearly killed his live-in boyfriend by slashing the man's neck with a shard of glass."

Tatz neither asked Kalinowski to verify the details of the story nor did he print Hildreth's name. He did effectively out Kalinowski, report on the decision by Brockton Hospital to not renew Kalinowsi's contract, and the one night Kalinowski spent in jail.

But in preparing for his court date, Kalinowski is also preparing to move on.

"Sure, I'm concerned about making sure that he can't do to anyone else what he did to me," he says, "but really I just pity him."

As of Nov. 29, Hildreth's Gay.com ad, "BostonMuscle1," was active, though his last log in with that screen name was in February. The profile includes a picture of a man wearing only blue hospital scrubs. Kalinowski says the picture is of him from a few years ago. According to the profile, "BostonMuscle1" is a "doc." •

Now Lets get this right. We have three floors in the shape of a U in Main Housing, One Officer per floor and sometimes one per two floors. So with an average of 58 inmates per floor, That’s with the addition of the new beds, It's not like the flats of a block, you cannot see around corners, back or front stairwells or Bathrooms. So who will be the first Officer to get fired for not properly monitoring the unit, especially when your doing your Room shakes. Come on MR.C add Officers to our count not inmates.
Think about it, a block in other facilities such as Shirley has two Officers running it per 80 inmates and that’s square and wide open. We cannot see but one hallway at a time. These units should be Two man units for safety and security.

There is now a board that hopefully will help expose all the abuse going on and show the different types of discipline being handed out for the same or similar cases. But it needs your input to succeed.

Straight Talk
Posted on 10/27/2005 at 05:54:38 PM by why

Why are we using this service if their using it against us. I read a question on Straight Talk today. Someone asked about physical standards for existing Correction Officers. They stated that they knew Correction Officers that couldn't even do a round without breathing heavy. They knew several 300 pound officers. They didn't trust these people in emergencies. The answer was that the Associate Commissioner would look at this issue. Why are we using this forum. Their is no Straight Talk here. It's an official bitch board, without the language. We are giving the Associate Commisioner more ammunition against us. This subject, along with other subjects, such as doctors notes, shouldn't be given to a one sided forum like Straight Talk. Nobody should be airing our dirty laundry to a Administration that will use this against us.
I call on all Union Members not to use Straight Talk. I'm asking the union to also recommend the same. Boycott Straight Talk now. Don't be a rat.
