FBI: Lucent Workers Stole Secrets

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Three scientists accused of stealing Lucent Technologies software and sharing it with a Chinese company made plans to take their venture public and bragged it would become an Internet equipment giant in China, authorities say.

The two Lucent employees and another man, all Chinese born, were arrested Thursday by the FBI (news - web sites) for allegedly stealing trade secrets from Lucent. They were ready to roll out their ``rip-off'' product in September, U.S. Attorney Robert Cleary said.

Cleary said there are no allegations that the Chinese company, Datang Telecom Technology Co. of Beijing, was aware of the theft.

It is unclear if the Chinese company, which is run largely by the government, obtained enough data to replicate Lucent's PathStar system.

The Lucent scientists, Hai Lin, 30, and Kai Xu, 33, were arrested at their New Jersey homes. They are Chinese nationals in the United States on business visas, Christie said.

``They came to Lucent as scholars, but in reality, they were no more than sleuths,'' Cleary said.

The third suspect, Yong-Qing Cheng, 37, was arrested at his work place at Village Networks, an optical networking vendor.

THE SPY PLANE, THE POSSIBLE OLYMPIC DEBACLE, AND NOW THIS! What the hell is going on with us and the Chinese?!

What the hell is going on in the world today? It seriously makes it sound like that Dubya feels that we need to have an enemy in today's society. Russia is a third-world toilet now. Daddy is still pissed at Iraq, but nothing will come of that. I know! Let's wank off at the Chinese! I was reading the Wall Street Journal down here this mornin' and noticed how the good ol' boys at the WSJ pointed out that they were "Chinese Computer Scientists." At first I thought that Big Red's government sent in spys or something.

Yea right, what the fuck is W doing. I mean here goes the big and bad USA picking on another poor nation that cannot defend itself. Why do we insist on picking fights with nations that would not bother us, do we just get off from it? Or, is it because, and I am just guessing here, some of our actions are warranted and necessary parts of the international diplomacy game?

China is not Kuwait or Grenada, they are a major world power, they fuck with us as much as we fuck with them. And I am so tired of hearing how this is W's doing and he is ruining our relations with them. I mean Clinton's sorry, weak ass used to sell technology to them, I am sure they loved that. Now that we have someone saying we are not going to let you take advantage of us, every one gets in a tiffy. I would rather have the hard-ass over the sell-out!

Hey, this administration did not start the spy missions, and china is not innocent of spying on us. So why can't we have our plane back, and why did they keep pur pilots as hostages? OH, ooo, and then, oh this pisses me off, why can't we sell weapons to a democratic nation (Taiwan) that is severly outmatched by their bully of a neighbor who considers them just a rogue province and threatens their existance and has missles aimed at them and fires those missiles in their direction...without getting shit for it? Hey, we didn't give them the Aegis cruisers, that should be enough to make everyone complacent. But oh no, we should not have given them anything, "typical american manuevering," right? Oh, and then we get kicked off the Human Rights panel of the UN. Voted off by nations that produce some of the biggest HR violations in the world...Sudan, China.....but hey, I know, we are the bad guys, boy I wish we would just leave those poor chinese alone!
