Okay, not that masons and those other labor-focused, trade-based professions cannot make someone well-off. My uncle is a mason and was able to send a willing son to college without much loan taking being necessary. My father was a baker that never managed to successfully start and maintain a business of his own. Thus I had to ask Uncle Sam for a big handout.

Derek, I really believe that this resentment is nothing deeper than the product of envy, and has been with us forever. And I may be ignorant of many facts, but I think that the growth of this resentment that you have noticed DOES in fact exist, BUT I think it is nothing more than an old human failing (ENVY) responding to a smaller and smaller number of people that have a lot more than most people.

BUUUUUUT, then again, I would have to research this. I take a moment and think, and I wonder at the ration of haves and have nots in ages past, and history has certainly had times when there was perhaps 1% of the population rich and the other 99% dirt poor without even a middle class to break them up.

Anyway, I am still babbling. Tell me what you think.

I would like to know exactly who "the rich" are in this discussion here. I mean, are we talking about old money business owners? Are we talking about politicians who embezzle money from their community?

I don't know if I necessarily would call this the "hatred of the rich" but more the hatred of the dishonest business tycoon type. I mean you don't see people hating the million dollar sports players JUST BECAUSE they are rich, do you? Why is that? Because they respect what they're doing? Who hates successful artists/musicians who are respected for their work? I don't know too many people who say they resent people like that, as least not as much as how they resent the blue blooded old white man reaking of old money and sound investments and connections. THAT is what these people resent. At least that is what it seems like to me. The fact that someone who they don't respect is in a powerful position and living a fabulously comfortable lifestyle makes them upset. Of course, that's also the problem; they are focused on Money and Power being the ultimate coveted circumstances. Wrong attitude.

I'm sure someone is going to disagree with me so go ahead...let's hear someone else tell us their thoughts...

I am not referring to those frustrated poor that do not like people who have more than they do. I am pointing out that we have socialist tendencies that are backed by resentment of success across the board. How many hollywood types do we have saying "tax away" we can afford it. And when it comes down to it, they have the money to hire the right accountants and lawyers to hide their money, or reinvest it sdo they do not have to worry about taxes. It always seems that the middle class takes the brunt of the countries financial needs. It is a racial thing, a guilt thing and a sensational thing that I will get into more of later.......

Okay, you say:

"I am pointing out that we have socialist tendencies that are backed by resentment of success across the board."

Who is "we"? The middle class? I know you mention that the middle class get the shaft most of the time, and that is what I was saying. I never really said anything about "the poor", which to me means beneath whatever the poverty level is...I meant the middle class. There may be a lower middle class, but I don't consider the lower middle class "poor". I am talking about the resentment of the rich by the middle class. By the way, what is the state of the middle class? Is there a shrinking or a growing middle class, for that matter? I guess I am looking for your insight on the socio-economic state of the country. Maybe what we need is a bit of background for this discussion.

And I know you say "across the board", but I am going to be a bastard and demand some specificity here! I won't let you lay down those doublespeak phrases, buddy!

And what are these "socialist tendencies"? I know you are probably busy and could not really write a very detailed reply, so I won't hold it against you for being vague. ;-)

Yes, I do not have time today to get specific, I will clear this up though, when I said "we" I meant Americans......

I guess I did not relay my message clearly enough in my rant, but the problem I have for this modern disdain for success is that it seems many people feel it is the rich owe this to them personally....
