if they made it absolutely safe, no one would do it. Those people are adrenalin junkies through and through. There is no other explanation for participating in that sport.

I will also guarantee this.... I don't have enough interest in the Olympics to know this... but wherever the next Winter Games are held, their track will be faster. It may indeed be safer, but I guarantee, it won't be slower.

That said, I have always been against the nascar policy of slowing cars down. If you don't want to go fast then take up knitting. But when you're sitting on a sled that probably weighs 3 pounds, and going 154 miles an hour three inches off the ice, than yeah, I think maybe its time to slow them down a little bit. But to do that would mean no more world records and that would spell the end of luge as an Olympic sport. So I don't know what the answer to it is.
I can say that even if they dressed that guy in body kevlar, the outcome would have been the same.
