Illegal bleeder valves on the #38 at Pocono? UPDATE: Record penalty? Sources tell Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody that NASCAR discovered clandestine [secrecy or concealed] air pressure bleeder valves on the tires of Travis Kvapil's #38 Front Row Motorsports Ford Sunday at Pocono Raceway. Following the rain delay, NASCAR officials reportedly observed two soft tires on the rear of Kvapil's car and held him from rolling back onto the track for the start of the race. Closer examination of those tire and wheel assemblies allegedly revealed illegal bleeder valves, which purge excess air pressure from the tires as it accumulates under race conditions. If confirmed, the team would likely face a major NASCAR penalty, since tires are considered to be one of the sanctions "untouchable" items, along with engines and fuel.(Sirius Speedway)(6-8-2010)
UPDATE: After yesterday's story about Front Row's possible infraction at Pocono, [NASCAR Insiders] are hearing today that the penalty from NASCAR could be the biggest ever handed down. When NASCAR makes the announcement later today or tomorrow, expect the penalty to include a $250,000 fine and 300 driver and owner points for Travis Kvapil and owner Bob Jenkins. A suspension for crew chief Steven Lane will also be included. This penalty tops the sanctions handed down last season to Carl Long's team after his engine was discovered to be too large at Charlotte. No word yet on how this will affect the team's status moving forward. Expect the team to appeal the decision. (NASCAR Insiders)(6-8-2010)

Unfortunately (for me at least) is that before the Olympics they ran four episodes of the new season on Canadian tv. Then they went on hiatus until tonight. Both CTV and CBS listed it as a new episode, but tonights show that the first of the 4 episodes shown before the Olympics so I suspect the next 3 weeks will be repeats too. I don't really care. I love the show.
The bald cop doesn't look like it but he's the lead singer in a rock band too. Go figure.

Please do me a favor. Tonight on CBS... 9est I THINK (check your guide) the show Flash Point starts its 3rd season. This is without question the best Canadian television show ever made. Others (Galactica etc) were good, made in Canada shows but they aren't set in Canada and usually don't have Canadian actors. This one is pure Canadian. Only the female cop Jules is an American (she even plays an American).

Just watch one episode. Trust me, its a GREAT show. Its about the Metropolitain Toronto Police Strategic Response Unit. worth an hour of your time.

The Sack Lunches

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight.
'I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,' I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me.
I decided to start a conversation.

'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated nearest to me. 'Petawawa. We'll be there for two weeks for special
training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan.'

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would
be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time.

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. 'No, that seems like a
lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks. I'll wait till we get to base.'

His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight
attendant a fifty dollar bill. 'Take a lunch to all those soldiers.' She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her
eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. 'My son was a soldier in Afghanistan; it's almost like you are doing it for
him.'

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked,
'Which do you like best - beef or chicken?' 'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to
the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class.

'This is your thanks.'

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. 'I saw
what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.' He handed me twenty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he
walked. I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane.
When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand and said, 'I want to shake your hand.' Quickly
unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was a soldier and I was
a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I was embarrassed
when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of
me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who
stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five
dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed
them seventy-five dollars. 'It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God
Bless You.'

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travellers.

As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for
our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little.

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'Canada' for an amount of 'up
to and including my life.'

That is Honour, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

May God give you the strength and courage to pass this along to everyone on your email buddy list.
I JUST DID!

Prayer Request: When you receive this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our troops around the world.
Please send this on after a short prayer. Don't break it!

There is nothing attached. Just send this to people in your address book. Do not let it stop with you. Of all the
gifts you could give a Marine, Soldier, Sailor, Airman, & others deployed in harm's way, prayer is the very best
one...

Prayer:

'Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.'

She began performing in the rock music scene of New York City's Lower East Side whilst enrolling at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She soon signed with Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. During her early time at Interscope, she worked as a songwriter for fellow label artists and captured the attention of Akon, who recognized her vocal abilities, and got her signed to his own label, Kon Live Distribution.

Question: what nascar driver holds the record for going the fastest?

Did you hear what bruton Smith is offering? The Indy 500 is starting earlier next year so he wants people to run both again. $20million if you win both. Thats going to get someone hurt. I can see Andretti, Kyle Busch, maybe Tony Stewart and Danica Patrick trying it.

I got them all pretty cheap when I was decorating my bedroom and which I never displayed.

I came away with my computer fixed, a new high speed video card, a 1 terrabyte external hard drive, a nice little bar fridge for my studio, and a laptop computer. Total investment by me: less than $50 invested in those coins.

downside is I pulled in the drivewya tonight and found a black bear. he left, but he was none too quick about it.

I know what the problem is. Google 'google redirect virus' sometime. I have no idea how I got it but it is a nasty little bastard.

Google redirect allows you to go to google but when you type in a search, it takes you either someplace totally different, doesn't go anywhere at all or takes you to a blank page.
There are all kinds of fixes for it. The problem is, the one I got is a little different. I downloaded and installed firefox and attempted to use bing as a search engine and the same thing happened. I just spent the last 4 hours with a computer genius and his equally smart wife. She had said to me last night, "Come over at 7. You'll be fixed up by 7:15" That didn't happen. They ran 14 different virus checkers and every one of them failed to find it. It is running somewhere in the background and one thing we do know is, it keeps at least 4 google's open and three Internet Explorers open at the same time. You can shut them down but within a second or two they are back on.

Mike fixes these things for a living and he checked every database he could think of and so far this exact virus has no fix.

Thankfully, since my last computer problem, we had installed a second hard drive and I have been saving everything to it. all thats on my c drive are programs. Photoshop and stuff like that, for which I have all of the cd's. So as we speak, my computer is having its hard drive wiped out. Tomorrow they are re-installing everything. Once they do that, that computer will never again be connected to the internet. Right now I am using an old machine I had in my closet. I'll uninstall everything like PS and stuff from it to make it run a little quicker. but this will be the only one I use for the internet now.

I have a problem... a serious one.

My computer has developed an issue and no one seems to know whats causing it or how to fix it. I cannot use any search engine. Bing, Google... nothing. Its not just with Internet Explorer. I downloaded and installed firefox and tried using Bing from there with the same problem. And here's the problem:

I go to google.com or google.ca or anything else and do a search. Let's say I search for blueberry pie recipes. I hit enter and I get the normal list of links to blueberry pie recipes. But when I click on any of them, one of two things happens... either I get a 404 error or the page doesn't move at all. I can click on the link till I'm blue in the face and nothing happens. Occassionally, if I go to google as soon as I re-boot the computer, it will work but within 30 seconds or a minute and its the same thing.

I have run microsoft security essentials and superantispyware over and over and over. I get their updates three times a day and run them again. They are finding no viruses. occassionally they find trojans or something and move them to the vault or quarantine but nothing else.

Any ideas?

I belong to a group of photographers and models called model mayhem. This is odd. I googled that and got the normal list. The first three on the list were all for pages within model mayhem and those links worked. But the fourth link was for 'model boat mayhem' and when I clicked on that I got the 404 error message.

Any ideas? Don't say its expensive because I have no money.

Why should a hard working guy pay over $200 for a family of 4 to watch a baseball game? He'll get decent seats, maybe a beer and a soda for the wife and kids. Nothing fancy. And the guy playing right field getting a sun tan and going 0 for 4 that night will make more money on that night than the guy in the seats will see all year. BULLSHIT!

In 1964 Detroit Tiger Al Kaline turned down a $100,000 a year deal with the team stating that NO baseball player was worthy of such money!!!!!!!

Speaking of baseball, RIP Ernie Harwell, the voice of the Tigers for 42 years, who passed away today at the age of 92. one of the on-air guys did a bit from outside the race track. The sign could be seen clearly. And it said "TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE."
On Jayski today it says tickets for Darlington are available.

Ten years ago would you have believed that Bristol, Richmond and Darlington wouldn't sell out?

Last season, Junior said track owners need to start lowering their prices. I think it was Eddie Gossage, Texas president, who told Junior to stop telling other people to lower their prices unless he was willing to do the same. Junior replied, "Check my website. I've lowered prices on everything I sell. Everything."

Until nascar and the track owners realize that not everyone is made of money, they are going to see crap like that week after week. It makes no sense to have a single empty see that could otherwise be sold, even for less money.

Several months ago, Clark Howard on CNN Saturdays, did a piece on how to see a pro sporting event for almost nothing. Did you know that something like 20 major league ball parks still sell tickets for $5? The deal is, you can only buy one ticket, and as soon as you buy the ticket, you have to go through a door right there, and you cannot leave the park (or you won't be allowed back in). They make you go inside immediately so that you can't sell it to a scalper or buy more. So Howard parked his car 3/4 of a mile from the park. It was a Sunday so parking on the street that far away, was free. They bought a bottle of Coke and a bag of chips each before they went to the park. Total for the food was about $10. Then they each went up to the window and bought their tickets and went in.
Now he did say the tickets were up high, but you could see everything and you could tell who the players were. The family of four saw a major league ball game for under $40.

Now why in bloody hell doesn't nascar see the value in that?
When Phil Esposito brought the Lightning to Tampa Bay, he made sure that all investors knew there would always be some tickets available for $5... to every game. And it works.
NASCAR needs to pull its collective head out of its ass before its too late.

"JR WAKEUP! rh is only intrested in crushing an Earnhardt. Now that your dad is gone, you are in his sights.

Please show us one shred of evidence to back that up. Just one piece of evidence that shows us that Rick Hendrick and
Dale Earnhardt were anything worse than competitors.

If what you say is true, than the easiest thing for hendrick to do would be to say to Junior, "We don't have a sponsor for this weekend and I can't afford to run the car with bare fenders so you can stay home this weekend."

If he wanted to end Junior's career, he'd send him somewhere else. And by the way, as a Dale Earnhardt Jr fan, I;d have thought you'd have paid closer attention to the deal he announced with Hendrick. Rick hendrick owns the rights to all Dale Junior merchandise now. t-shirts, jackets, hats, die cast, Hendrick licenses all of that and Junior gets the cut for the use of name and likenss.

You may not like Rick Hendrick, but you cannot say he's stupid. If he really wanted to ruin Junior, he'd be taking a huge chunk of change out of his own pocket since more than 50% of all souvenier sales are Dale Earnhardt Jr merchandise.

Jesus.

How Jr managed to piss away a 4th place restart, to a 13th place finish AGAIN is beyond me. I am really starting to doubt his focus. He NEEDS to get AWAY from rh and go to Childress...NOT to run the 3 car but he NEEDS RC. RC was the closest thing to a dad to him growing up.

JR WAKEUP! rh is only intrested in crushing an Earnhardt. Now that your dad is gone, you are in his sights.

I need a new page for my website. One that will provide links to new pages, and those new pages will require passwords so only the people whose photos are on a given page will be able to see them. So I asked around for someone who can do it for me. A woman explained exactly how she would do it, and she could set it up so that I could update it myself. I asked her what she needs from me and she said,

"Your passwords and sign-in info to your web host, and $50 before I start."

Now, do you think thats a good idea?

Larry Mac is getting to be downright stupid. Its kind of sad, really.

Who else thinks a pissed off Jeff Gordon might be interesting, especially when he owns 1/2 of the car that pisses him off? I think I'm going to enjoy this. I just hope Hendrick doesn't say, "Stop it."

It must be frustrating for Johnson. The guy is getting himself in deeper and deeper. and his boss is always right there when he has a brain fart. I love it.

With about 30 to go I picked Harvick and that was some win he got. Kind of reminded me of his first one.

What happens if qualifying gets canceled/rained out?
After the 5th race of the season, the current season OWNERS points are used:
#1) - First 35 by current Owner Points [position 1-35][top 35 teams do NOT need to attempt ALL the races]
#2) - Last Years Sprint Cup Champ or the Event Champion if not already in the field
#3) - Car Owners whose team has won in the previous and current season not already in the field
#4) - Drivers who have won in the previous and current season not already in the field
#5) - ALL Past Sprint Cup Champions not in by 1 thru 4 [is NOT charged against the 6 past champ provisionals]
#6) - Qualifying Attempts [not starts] with Owners points as the tie breaker, if still tied then by best finish
#7) - Qualifying Order Position
(all above apply as long as the team was entered by the entry deadline - usually 7-13 days before the race)

Larry Mac said something during practice that I had never heard before.... they were talking about the go or go homers and who would make the show and who wouldn't if qualifying was rained out.

Larry said there is an exception to the rule. "The 09 car won last year and if you won last year or in the races of the current year, you are pretty much guaranteed a starting spot."

Have any of you guys ever heard that before? If thats true, who would get bumped? A faster car? A past champ? Thats the first time I have ever heard that winning a race last year gets you into a race this year. The All Star race, yes, but Talladega???? any regular season race?

Phoenix Racing team for sale: James Finch, the defending winner owner [#09 Chevy in Cup, #1 Chevy in NNS] of this weekend's Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway, is putting his Phoenix Racing operation up for sale. For a price, the new owner would acquire a 70,000 sq. ft. building complete with 35 race cars, all the machinery and two houses on nine acres in Spartanburg, S.C. "I've had a real good time," Finch said. "But it's time to do something else. Offer me a fair price then give me half and we'll have a deal." Finch fielded cars for a variety of drivers in NASCAR's Cup and Nationwide Series as well as ARCA. He won 12 NNS races with six different drivers on nine different tracks. But his most coveted win came at Talladega last year as Finch provided rookie Brad Keselowski with an opportunity to earn his first Sprint Cup victory. Finch took his entire share of the $312, 075 purse and offered it to Keselowski for his parents, lifelong racers who campaigned in ARCA and NASCAR with their family-owned operation. Keselowski made his NASCAR debut behind the wheel of the K Automotive Ford truck in 2004 at Martinsville. "I did some cool things for my parents with that," Keselowski added. "That was something I was proud to be able to do to help them out financially because they're going through some hard times. It's cool to be able to be there for them." James Buescher is Finch's latest protégé. The 20-year-old from Plano, Texas, finished the last two races of the season for Finch in the NNS and is currently 19th in the point standings. His best finish this season was eighth at Daytona.(FoxSports)(4-24-2010

Tiffany came home from the hospital at about noon today. They know she has an intestinal virus of some kind but don't know what caused it. The doctor at the hospital said if she starts throwing up again, she should get right back into the hospital but thats all he said. After 7 different blood tests and a spinal tap, thats all they can say. Tiffany came home today and said, "Well at least I'm still alive." She seems pretty good tonight. The doctor said to keep her home from school for at least the next week. My sister said, "I think she should go to school tomorrow." Have I ever told you that my sister is an idiot. This is the same woman who tied one end of a rope to her waist and the other end to a 125 pound dog, threw a ball and said "Get it Jake." 'nuff said.

As for me... I saw the doctor today. The pain I've been having, and probably the nausea too, is because I have a deep infection where the feeding tube is. The skin isn't red or anything so I didn't think it was infected or anything but he took one look at it and put a pair of rubber gloves on and took a swab of it. he sent eh swab away and put me on antibiotics. I'll know more when the results come back.

has had a cough for the last couple of days. yesterday I took her out to wait for the bus and she said, "Should I stay home today?" I said that if she felt sick, she shouldn't go to school. So she went in the house and laid down on mom's bed. then she started hacking and throwing up. We figured it was the flu. She had her H1N1 shot a longtime ago.
Last night at about 6pm she said she thought she better go to the hospital. Which is odd for a kid. My sister took her and they waited in the ER until almost 11pm when they were seen by a doctor. The doctor said, "its not the flu." They did blood work and found her white cells were down. They suspected menengitis most of the night. They did a spinal tap early this morning. They say now its not menengitis but don't know what it is yet. She's still in the hospital.

Worst-made cars on the road
Forbes.com - Hannah Elliott
With a 22% improvement in sales last month, and despite the six-month, $4.3-billion loss it announced last Wednesday, General Motors is likely to have its strongest spring and summer in years. Plus, the automaker had critically acclaimed new products at the recent New York Auto Show and the much-anticipated Chevrolet Volt is due out this fall.

Year-over-year sales of GM's Cadillac division alone are up almost 76%; sales in the Buick, Chevrolet and GMC divisions were each up more than 40% for March. The industry as a whole was up 24.3%.

Unfortunately just because GM's cars are selling well now doesn't mean they're the best bet for durability or value--yet. It'll take awhile before GM's new direction shows up in tangible new products at the dealership.

Four of the seven vehicles on our list of the worst-made cars on the road come from GM brands. And all of the cars on the list--including Chrysler's Dodge Nitro and Jeep Wrangler--are made by Detroit's Big Three. Only one car on the list is made by Ford Motor.

Behind the Numbers
To determine our list of the worst-made cars on the road, we started with the lowest-rated vehicles from four reliability and performance studies conducted this year. Those studies are all from Consumer Reports: The Most Reliable Cars Report; Best and Worst Values Report; Best and Worst Safety Performance Survey; and the CR overall scores for 2010 vehicles.

We then added to the list any vehicles that received fewer than three out of five power circles in this year's Vehicle Dependability Study from J.D. Power and Associates. Any car, truck or SUV named among the worst in at least three of those five total studies made the final cut to be on the "Worst-Made" list.

The biggest surprise on the list, given recent automotive news: It includes no Toyota-made vehicles. In fact, Toyota reported a 40.7% gain in sales last month over March 2009; its Lexus division was up 42%. (Generous buyer incentives greatly contributed to those numbers.) And although Consumer Reports has removed its "recommended pick" distinction from Toyota vehicles involved in the current recall, many analysts are standing by their previous assessments of Toyota's well-made products.

"Toyota and Lexus both were fairly steady on their quality" in the dependability report released last month, says Dave Sargent, J.D. Power's vice president of global vehicle research. "Toyota has both good quality and a high consumer perception of their quality--so Toyota is very much in line."

GM's Chevrolet hasn't fared as well. Overall sales at Chevrolet are up, but sales of the $16,985 Chevrolet Colorado were down 21.9% year-over-year. Sales of the truck are down 32.2% for the year to date.

The $11,965 Chevrolet Aveo made our list too--but probably won't in the very near future. When the 2012 Aveo comes out next year, it'll feature styling improvements (large vents in the front, 19'' wheels, circular headlights) and performance upgrades (likely a 1.4-liter, four-cylinder turbo-boosted engine with 138 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission). Early photos and speculation from experts like Jake Fisher, the senior automotive engineer at Consumer Reports, indicate it'll hold its own against Nissan's Versa and Honda's Fit--two reliable, affordable, strong sellers.

Tough Trucks?
Aside from the Aveo, though, most of the worst-made cars on our list aren't cars at all--they're trucks and SUVs. Besides the Colorado, GMC's $16,985 Canyon and Ford's $28,020 F-250 received some of the lowest scores of any vehicles we considered. The Canyon SLE, for instance, was listed by Consumer Reports as one of the worst values of any 2010 vehicle and as one of the least reliable new vehicles on the market this year. It received just two out of five power circles on J.D. Power's overall dependability rating.

The F-250 Lariat earned both the "worst value" and "worst safety performance" distinctions from Consumer Reports this year. It received an overall score of just 37 out of 100 points for predicted reliability, fuel economy, depreciation, ride, owner costs, accident avoidance, front-seat comfort, acceleration and owner satisfaction.

Trucks aren't inherently less dependable or worse-made vehicles, analysts say. Dan Hall, vice president of automotive consulting firm Auto Pacific, says they rate no differently in consumer satisfaction surveys than cars.

But in the past they have fallen behind in engineering upgrades and safety improvements, because automakers focus on improving "family-oriented" vehicles first, says Russ Rader, a director at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. "They're just being updated at a slower rate."

Jamie Hresko, the vice president of global quality for General Motors, says that’s not the case anymore--and consumers can expect to see tangible changes as soon as they get in the car.

Go to Forbes.com to see the full list

I don;t know how they can say that "Toyota and Lexus both were fairly steady on their quality" in the dependability report released last month, says Dave Sargent, J.D. Power's vice president of global vehicle research. "Toyota has both good quality and a high consumer perception of their quality--so Toyota is very much in line."

that makes no sense so I have to question the entire report.

That Johnson and Knaus are cheating. This is only my opinion, mind you, so there is no slander involved here.

Jeff Gordon is arguably the best race car driver in Cup. Like him or hate him, no one can argue with his talent. His numbers prove it.
So, is it anywhere in the relam of possibility, or probability, that he can begin to suck as soon as Johnson moves to Cup? Gordon hasn't won a championship since Johnson came to Cup, and Johnson has no only won a championship, but 4 in a row. The laws of probability do not favor that.
I do not believe that Hendrick Motorsports is cheating. If they were, and assuming Rick Hendrick is a money gabbing idiot, which I do not, than would it not stand to reason that he would want all of his cars doing the same thing? I think so, but they aren't. In fact, it can be safely stated, that Dale Junior, well, quite frankly, he sucks. Personally I don't think Junior is as good as his fans think he is, BUT he is a damn good race car driver. It seems to me that he should be running at least as well as Gordon and Martin. he isn't.
So I personally think that of all the crew chiefs at HM it is Chad Knaus, and Chad Knaus alone, who is cheating. No one can be that good that often. Jeff Gordon/Ray Evernham weren't, Richard Petty/Dale Inman weren't and Dale Earnhardt/Larry Mac weren't. No one is and I do not believe that Johnson/Knaus are either.
I think they are using traction control... you can turn it on and off with a cell phone from 10,000 miles away so to say if he had TC he wouldn't be able to do a burnout after the race is just plain wrong. But I think it's more than traction control. I think there's more to it and some day someone has to figure it out.
There is one thing that possibly points to a decision by Hendrick Motorsports to cheat... what better way to take heat off the 48 car, than to have the 88 be so bad? people are so concerned with why Junior sucks, that they aren't paying close enough attention to the team they need to watch.
A few years ago Rusty Wallace was getting pole after pole and Jack Roush finally got tired of it and put up the hundred grand needed to call them out. So at Sonoma, all of the crew chiefs gathered in the garage and watched as NASCAR tore the 2 car apart. Every piece of it was torn off the car and measured. And the car was legal and Roush lost his hundred grand. I think thats what makes owners scared to make accusations now.
But suppose for a second that Rick Hendrick knew. Is it possible that they are giving slightly inferior pieces to the 88, and 24 cars, just to be able to say, "See, we aren't cheating, or those two would be winnign races."

The race restarted with 4 to go and the Shrub in about 12th. Gordon leading, Newman second, green flag drops, Gordon spins his tires and Newman takes the lead and goes on to win. Congrats to Newman! It's an experience I'll never forget. Got some RADICAL pictures there too I printed a 30x40 of a car I shot with 400 ASA film. the grain was perfect for that shot....hmmm wish I could find that print. It was awesome. Oh welll memories!

back when racing was racing. Richard Tharp, Tommy Ivo, Gapp & Roush, Lee Hunter or...
Ed Pink Racing Engines

In probably 1976 or so I wrote a letter to the editor of Super Stock magazine. I still have the magazine somewhere. But 5 or 6 years ago I get an email from David, who actually found a copy of that magazine and he didn't even know I wrote that letter. He brought it up to me.

I miss drag racing the way it used to be. That was about the same time a kid named John Force started with his Brute Force funny car and as much as I like Ashley Force, that was about the time drag racing started racing downhill.

I remember one time Jack Roush was bent over Lee Hunter's Mustang pro stock.... Roush said, "Holy shit! This used to be a real car!"

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – The SFI Foundation, which sets safety standards and certifies equipment such as uniforms and helmets, announced Friday that it has terminated contracts with Impact Racing and all of its driver suits, arm restraints, shoes, gloves, socks, underclothing, helmet supports, and driver restraint systems will be decertified effective April 27.

The announcement comes while SFI and HANS Device creator Hubbard/Downing Inc. are suing Impact, owned by renowned safety pioneer Bill Simpson, over the use of counterfeit HANS helmet clips put on Impact helmets. The counterfeit clips had both HANS and SFI logos.

“Under the Contracts of Participation between SFI and Impact, SFI conformance labels and patches may only be obtained from SFI and no other source,” the SFI news release said. “Evidence shows that Impact had counterfeit SFI labels and patches made in Asia and then affixed them to Impact products it distributed to members of the racing community.”

NASCAR requires certain safety equipment to have SFI certification. Any drivers using Impact gear will have to change providers following April 27.

According to documents as part of the lawsuit, which deals only with clips and not uniforms, HANS alleges that Impact Racing bought counterfeit clips from China-based Richard Hung Enterprises for $8.90 a set – compared to $41.25 for the real clips – and were sold at a price of $52 a set ($13 below the HANS retail price).

In a deposition filed with the case, Simpson said while he did not dispute the clips were counterfeit, he never authorized anyone to engrave SFI or HANS markings on the clips.

Also in his deposition, Simpson said Impact made $52,000 in profit in 2008.

you never actually wipe your ass with it so people think its a souvenir.

You know that I don't think Knaus cheats any more than any other crew chief. No one can say their favorite team doesn't, or never has, cheated. Everyone does it. So I don't come down on the team for that, unless we find out they've been using airplane fuel or NOS, or traction control. When Gary Nelson was Kyle Petty's crew chief, they were the biggest cheaters in the sport. And they never got caught. You ought to read "Kyle at 100 MPH." He said some weekends they were actually afraid to take the car to the track. NASCAR knew Nelson was cheating, they just couldn't figure out what he was doing... so they hired him. Who better to catch cheaters than the best cheater in the sport. And when Nelson left Sabco, he pointed at one of the Mello Yello cars on the floor and said, "Don't ever bring that one to the track again. It will never pass Tech."
So they took the ID tags off that car and switched it with the tag from another car and then took it to the track. and Kyle got his last win for Mello Yello and then they retired that car. But Nelson was so good at cheating, even he couldn't find it during Tech.
Everyone cheats. Richard Petty once said, "If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying hard enough." Everyone does it. The problem is, Chad Knaus has taken it to a whole new level. He is doing something that no one else has even dreamed of doing. I believe he will get caught. I am willing to bet that every single time they find something illegal with the 48 team, Knaus wipes the sweat off his forehead and says 'thank God they missed the big one.' If you do something so illegal it'll get you suspended, you have do cheat with something else thats so obvious it gets found so they stop looking for the big one.

Remember that guy... whats his name..Smokey Yinuk(sp) he had the best damn garage in Florida or whatever. He won a 500 mile race by making half the pit stops any other team made. And they tore his car apart. At one point, officials took the gas tank out of the car. It was laying on the floor twenty feet from the car. He said, "I've had enough of this bullshit," and he got in the car and drove away... with the gas tank still laying on the floor.

I don't really care that Knaus cheats. But when he gets caught, and he will, I hope he gets tossed. Especially if its TC. But I don't think it will. When Richard Petty won his 200th race, NASCAR found the big engine while Petty was talking to Ronald Reagan. They let him keep the win but they took away his prize money and points. But there is so much money on the line now that they can't be doing that.
What I really hate about Knaus is his smug, better than thou attitude. He is probably the nicest man in the world, but that isn't how he comes across. And for the record, as a person, I do like Jimmie Johnson. But nobody is that good that often.

I think Twitter is dumb... who really gives a rats ass if I am going to get a tooth out in 15 minutes? But there are millions of people who do it, and millions more who follow them around because they have nothing better to do.
One celebrity who Twits or tweets or whatever, is Demi Moore.
A 21 year old man posted on her twitter page that he was going to kill himself. Someone, either Moore, or Ashton Kutcher, or someone in the house, asked if he was serious. He replied saying he was going to hang himself and stream it live because no one cares.
Another actress... I forget her name, happens to follow Demi Moore's twitter page. She immediately called 9-11 in the man's home town and said that since twitter is open domain, she wasn't invading anyones privacy, so she reported it.
The police arrived at the house. The guy's mother answered the door. The police told her what was happening so they all ran into the guy's bedroom and found him slumped over his computer crying. he is now getting needed medical attention.
In this case, because twitter streams live and there was one nosey person who wasn't afraid to get involved, someone lived.

there was still good racing at Bristol. Five years ago Bristol was fun.
When David, Al, Larry and I went there in '07, it was an awesome race except for the Kyle Busch winning part. It was exciting to be there, although part of that excitment was being with Al, who had never been to a race before. But I've been to a bunch and it was a fun race to be at.

I will say that I bet Bruton Smith and the idiots in Daytona probably never counted on such boring races with the progressive banking, although they should have. Today I dozed off... I didn't even know there was a 20 lap rain delay until they said so near the end of the race. And I even switched to Fox News and watched some of the health care debate. I never thought that would ever happen with Bristol of all places.

But I have to watch very loud annoying movies while he works on my computer. He says, "You're computer will be ready in an hour, come on over." So I go over and it ain;t ready so I get to watch Pirates of the Carribean on BluRay, on a 50 inch tv that is so loud his neighbors complain... his neighbor is his mother and she once went over at 3am to tell him to turn it off or she'd come over some day he isn't home.

So I put up with it but he knows his stuff and it always works. Right now I am having a tough time finding everything because they had to move a lot to save everything but at least I know its all there and the only thing that got lost were my contacts from my emails. who leaves their toilet seat up?

I watched a re-run of Myth Busters the other night and this oughta make everyone put their toilet seat down. I always have but now....

when you flush your toilet, the action of the whirling water vaporizes... atomizes whats in there. They proved that the water drops, and therefore whatever is in that water, atomizes and is ejected as far as 13 feet from your toilet.

Now personally, I know very fet people who keep their tooth brushes more than 13 feet from the toilet. Take it a step further, if your hand towels are closer than 13 feet, than you wash your hands with soap, and then wipe them on a towel that had atomized shit particles on it.

I am sure that is knowledge we could all live without knowing but there it is.

By the way, the also proved that your toilet seat is cleaner than the bar of soap at the sink. And a bar of soap that has cracks in it is dirtier still.

We can see the Chrysler collection again, that would be fun. GM has a car collection nearby, but it's not open to the public. Had a friend who worked there years ago, and got fired for driving a 1901 Oldsmobile into a garage door post, lol! There is the Sloan Museum in Flint, which has a lot of GM stuff including old concept cars. But I would say we go to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, part of Greenfield Village more than any of them. We can easily spend all day there and not see everything.

And I'd feel the same way no matter who crashed into who. IF Nascar only puts these guys on probation, which is nothing, then why not? Why not bring back the good old days of racing, isn't that what we want? Fueds, heels and hero's? Villians and the White Hats? You crash me, I crash you, simple and entertaining, sometimes safe, sometimes dangerous.

Don't get me wrong. I don't want to see drivers hurt or killed.

As long as there are no consistent rules or penalties, I say bring back the good old days right now. Brad and Carl can go at it all year and I'll love to watch.

when has nascar ever done anything more than extend the probation? they needed to park him and the car. Christ, harvick was tagged for rough driving in the truck series and they parked him in the cup series 2 days later.

she's a fan so she probably thinks he had a right to do that.

You know, back when I first started watching nascar, in the 70s and even before that, when a driver or team wanted to get back at someone, they did it very quietly... they never told anyone, they just 'made a mistake' on the track and that that that. Nothing was said publicly. Nothing got reported on the news, it was just taken care of.

The one year at Bristol or Richmond, Robbie Gordon spun out MIke Skinner and he said over his radio, "I thought we needed a caution, so I got us one." After that incident, Richard Childress took Gordon out behind the haulers and had a chat with him. No one knows what was said, but Gordon was a different driver when he came back out.

One year Dale Earnhardt Jr had a shitty car so he spun himself out. Not quite the same thing but he did stop the race illegally and he got a penalty for it.

My point is, things have changed. Thye changed for the worst right around the time Jeff Gordon climbed out of hiscar and slammed Matt kenseth in the chest at Bristol. Once that was on tv, it was like no holds barred. These isiots can do whatever they want on tv with very little repurcussions.

If I started a team tomorrow, and I don't care if my drivers are Kirk Shelmerdine and Andy belmont or Junior and Johnson. They'd get exactly the same rules. I'll follow Roger Penske for the first one:

Gentlemen, I will give you championship-caliber cars and engines every single weekend. In exchange for that, you follow two simple rules:

1: You will never ever Embarass me. You race hard and clean and I will support you till your dying day. But you embarass me just this much, and you are gone. Out. No appeals. Your contract will be paid up until the time of your firing and you'll get not one cent more. Is that clear? No? Really? No? Ok, don't sing the contract. I'll find someone who will.

2: You wreck anyone intentionally, and I will be the sole judge of what is intentional, if you wreck anyone intentionally, you will pay for your own car and that of the car you wreck, out of your salary. Is that understood? Good. You better hope shit like that doesn't happen at Talladega because that will really cost you. Understood?

And do it as cheaply as possible. But the owners have to convince a sponsor(s) to shell out millions of dollars to pay for it all. In return sponsors, and track owners want a full house every race. If I'm Lowes or Dupont, I want 160,000 fans seeing my advertising, not 75,000. When attendance suffers, sponsors can justify lower budgets, or get out completely. Throw TV into the mix, and everything gets screwed up. The fans suffer, ala Bristol. You'd THINK that attendance at the track would mean something, but I'm thinking that TV ratings carry more weight these days. No wonder Nascar never announces race attendance figure. Watch in the near future for camera angles that won't include the grandstands, I'll bet it's coming soon.

and I'm glad we went when we did too.
But what ticks me off is NOT the new surface. Its the God damn progressive banking and the fact that they widened the track. Now he did say they were putting safer barriers up and that will narrow the track, but that doesn't take away the progressive banking. If they'd re-surfaced the track and left that part out, it would have worked.

he is absolutely right when he said only wreck fans were complaining. The problem is, NO ONE is supporting it except the owners. And remember, if people stop going to the track, and stop watching, than sponsors will stop putting up the prize money. and when the prize money disappears, the owners will stop supporting it.

wreck fans? that was a dumb thing to say. and he used the Labonte/Earnhardt race as an example of the good stuff... EARNHRADT WRECKED LABONTE TO WIN THAT! That was the famous, "I didn't mean to wreck him. I just meant to rattle his cage," race.

referred to 160,000 paying customers as "wreck fans" spoke volumes about Bristol's stance on the new surface. Sure, it'll be safer and cheaper. But when Bristol turns to "Boring" and all those "wreck" fans don't come to the party, that's when they MIGHT admit to making a mistake. All his crap about geology is BS. The whole earth is geological. Spend enough cash, and you can make any track out of any surface. It's not like the track is built on a fault line. Been there for 50 years and hasn't collapsed yet. Trading safety for excitement. Any driver ever die at Bristol? None that I know of. Never saw a car on its roof at Bristol. Yep, I'll keep watching on TV, but I'll never go back in person. We're lucky we went when we did, and I loved every minute. NO regrets!

Here is the note I sent to Jeff Byrd:
Now that, for the first time in my memory, tickets are available for the spring race at Bristol, will you guys admit that you screwed up?
I understand why you did what you did to that track. You made the racing 'better.' Fewer wrecks, fewer cautions, fewer torn up cars, less money out of the owners' pockets. Better racing. But that isn't what made Bristol Bristol. People don't go to Bristol for 'better' racing. They line up and pay scalpers prices for 'EXCITING' racing.
Because of what you were going to do, some friends and I made a decision. I live in Nova Scotia. Another friend lives in Iowa, another in Detroit and a fourth in Colorado. Three of us flew in to Detroit, rented a motorhome and drove to Bristol. We got to see the last great race at your track. Unfortunately we got to see Kyle Busch take a jack hammer to the track afterwards.

Now that Bristol is no longer a guaranteed sell out, I have three questions for you:

1: When will you admit you were wrong?

2: Can you put it back to the way it was?

3: Will you?

I have one more question.... the idiot who decided to destroy Bristol... does he still have a job?

I look forward to hearing from you,

Rick Dupuis

here is the reply I just got:

Hello Rick,

I’m going to answer on Jeff Byrd’s behalf because he is taking an unexpected medical leave that’s going to cause him to miss the first major event in his 14-year history with the Speedway.

To answer your questions, first we must tell you why the track had to be resurfaced at all, and that requires a little history.

The track was built in 1960, much flatter, and then banked about six years later to the base configuration in place today. The asphalt surface served pretty well until Goodyear and Hoosier started battling it out on the high banks, and the increased grip, compounded by the advanced downforce, pulled the rocks right out of the asphalt and sprayed the outside retaining walls with aggregate.

So, in 1992, then-track-owner Larry Carrier put down the first all-concrete surface for NASCAR (at that time) Winston Cup cars. Since then, Dover, Nashville and I think Iowa have joined the all-concrete group, and of course there’s Martinsville, who paved with concrete through the corners before any of the rest of these tracks.

When the 1992 concrete was applied, it was done with very little technology: two-by-fours, strings and not much else. After the pour, the concrete surface was so rough, the drivers couldn’t drive on it. But taking out the concrete and starting over was not considered an option. So, Carrier, who had this kind of experience in drag racing, brought in grinders and grinded the bumps out of the track.

Downside of that is that the surface was very, very thin in some spots.

Add to the post-tension steel structure holding the surface together, there was a lot of stress on that concrete.

There’s a lot of geology in this area. Caves, rock formations, fill, Appalachian erosion, and over time, the entire concrete track pulled away from the outside retaining walls. I once found a large size high-top sneaker between the track surface and the outside retaining wall. I mean, the gap was big, and indicated that the track was moving.

Over the years, and we chose to keep this our dirty little secret, steel cables snapped chunks of concrete out of the surface on hot days. There were years when our operations guys cooled the track in the summer by running water over the surface to preserve it as best as possible.

Every event, spring and summer, we held our collective breath hoping not to have an embarrassing track failure. You may have seen an embarrassing track failure recently at the Daytona 500. That was our nightmare, but fortunately, it never happened to us.

Eventually, an all-new track had to be addressed. And putting it back like it was was not an option. It would have been next to impossible to recreate that surface.

There are a lot of factors affecting ticket demand right now, and yes, we will admit that some of our fans are more “wreck fans” than race fans.

We are making an adjustment this year by adding SAFER barriers to take away some of the racing room that was added when the re-do took place, and we will monitor this and make further adjustments as needed.

But there are some flaws in the logic that the race track is messed up. We run a lot of events here, and there’s a lot of action here. We all did handstands when the first Nationwide Series race ran on the new track because it was phenomenal.

I expect a great race to break out here, just like always happened on the old track. There are a lot of factors that make that happen. Earnhardt and Labonte duplicated their big finishes in 1995 and 1999. What do you remember about the races between?

Don’t give up on us. I’d rather see a race here than anywhere.

I wonder if the idiots who decided to make the racing better at Bristol still have jobs?

The really really sad thing was that after the race we saw, the winner, Kyle Busch, got to take the jack hammer and make the first hole. He should have said, "Stick the jack hammer up your ass."

They were right about one thing: the racing is better. Very few wrecks, much fewer cautions, fewer cars get torn up. All in all, much better racing. But thats not what made Bristol a sell out every race. People don't give a rat's ass about who pays for the wrecked cars. They go to bristol for one reason: exciting racing, not 'good' racing.

The real questions are, how long before they admit they were wrong, and can they put it back the way it was?

I sincerely hope nascar takes a good hard look at this before they tear up the surface of Daytona. They may find themselves well and truely screwed if they don't learn lessons from their own mistakes.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

but there are things I want to do that can't be done with just a camera. You cannot make an aquarium like that... or if there is one, it would be impossible to get permission to shoot the image the way I want.
A lady I know is making a mermaid tail for a photo she wants me to do, but she won't actually be in the water for it.. she will be on the deck of a boat so it will be done ith the camera. Its not the same though.

I love my 120 box camera. I love my 35mm Canon but my Canon XS digital and Photoshop allow me to do things that are impossible any other way. And the fact of the matter is, the person who bought that photo from me, originally thought it was a photograph. And if I can create something and people think it's a photograph, than I've done it right.

Goofy crap like those robots stepping through the stargate that I showed you, thats just goofing around. I don't consider it art and I don't consider it serious work. The teepee and the aquarium on the other hand, I do consider art. And if I showed it to you AFTER the real mermaid models were in it, I'd be willing to bet that very few people would guess it was a photoshop creation and not a photograph.

I was in a discussion about Ansel Adams and someone said that he would have hated Photoshop. But that man was dodging and burning 75 years before photoshop so I personally think he would have been brought in as a consultant on the creation of Photoshop. For sure, he would be using it.

Everyone has their own expectations and their own ideas of what art is. It shouldn't matter how it's created. What should matter is the end result... that piece of artwork. To tell someone their work isn't art just because you don't happen to think it isn't a real crative process is wrong.

To say, "I am in the complete minority when it comes to "images" and the creativity behind them." is to say these are only 'images' in the word and not the product and that is wrong. Thats like saying the Mona Lisa isn't art because it wasn't made with a camera. To put the word' creativity' in the same sentence implies that there is no creativity involved and there most certainly is. The end result is what you saw in your mind's eye before you started, and to end up there when you're finished.

I would say that anyone who just snaps a picture is no more of an artist than a two year old with a box of crayons is. There has to be some creativity in it or its just some ink on a sheet of paper.

Those are the last images I will post here.

what you are doing with images. I know more than I want to about Photoshop. I realize what it takes to creats these images...while this may be good for your creative "juices" it does the exact opposite for me. I never was much of a fantasy buff. I also realize I am in the complete minority when it comes to "images" and the creativity behind them.

But I think it's great you are so good at it. I'm sure you will win the contest.

I am working very hard on digital creations now. I haven't painted anything in 2 or 3 years because I just lost interest in paint brushes. But this digital stuff is getting the creative juices flowing again. I sold some paintings in the past but never one for that kind of money.

I am working on an image now that has taken 4 months so far. If you don't know anything about Photoshop, you wouldn't get the process. Its 261 layers so far and basically what that means is, I have had to create 261 seperate images to make this one. That one picture file right now takes up more memory than the entire hard drive on my last computer. Here is PART of it

The main part of the aquarium is actually the woods behind my house. There is a sunken ship in there that wasn't really sunk until I got a hold of it. There are two dolphins and 14 other fish. I shot Tiffany and Dillon twice.. once facing me for the reflection and once facing away from me. The two mermaids are only there for the time being. I have two ladies who are going to pose for the real mermaid shots and I'll insert them when the time comes. Everything about the aquarium and building was hand made by me. Its actually much bigger than this, with a statue of Venus on the left and Poseidon on the right but to see it on a computer monitor, everything is too small.

I am making this image for one reason: to win best in show at this years Image Maker's competition in September.
