I have been scanning the messages over the board and saw this thread. From what Lisa has told us about her babysitting experiences, is similar with myself. I just haven't babysitting anywhere near as long.
As I mentioned in my intro, I began smoking only about 2 months ago. well, my babysitting experience is pretty short as well, I have only been babysitting about half that time, just over a month.
Right now, I only babysit for one family. It's actually a single mom who has two children. A 5 yr old girl and 6 yr old boy. The mom is really cool. She is a smoker and has allowed me to smoke while babysitting her two. Her only rule was that I could only smoke in her house as long as my mother knew. Mom had no problems with it. I think she made that rule up because she didn't want a situation where I was smoking secretly in her house away from my parents. Which I can understand.
Lisa, the kids I babysit for have similar reactions to my smoking like you have said for the kids you watch. "That stinks", "Pee-Uuu", "Why do you smoke?" or another one "My mom smokes and hers stink too." They don't say it to be rude, but just because they don't like it. And I understand that. It wasn't all that long ago I felt the same way as you maybe have read in my intro.
I can't say the kids respect my authority more because I smoke as I have always smoked while babysitting them. But they do respect me and are good kids (most of the time).
You asked about discipline. As I said, the kids are good overall and usually if they start to get in trouble a scolding or threat of a punishment will get them behaving again. But sometimes I have had to follow through on that threat of punishment. I have used cornertime and I sent the boy to bed earlier once.
But also, like yourself, I have used spanking. Their mom gave me permission to spank them if I found it to be needed. Thankfully, that has only happened once. It was with Katie (5 yr old). I know a lot don't agree with it, but my mom has raised me and my siblings with spankings and I can say it certainly has been effective. I found it was effective with Katie, as well.
As for having a cigarette before giving a spanking to help calm your nerves, I don't think it sounds weird at all. When I have been spanked by my mom, she usually follows me into my bedroom and spanks me right away. But sometimes she is really mad and has me wait upstairs for her and she stays downstairs to have a cigarette. I know because I sometimes can hear the familiar click of her lighter or if I can't hear that, I can smell the cigarette smoke from downstairs.
She does that of course if she feels she is too angry and it helps relax and calm her before spanking me or one of my siblings. So no, I don't think that sounds weird at all.
For those of you who have smoked while babysitting, do you find you smoke more often? I guess I do since I don't have the same limits imposed while I am babysitting while at home. I usually smoke 6-7 cigarettes a day now. But if I babysit, in a 4-5 hour sitting job, I may have 5-6 cigarettes which will always puts me over what I normally have in a day. Has anyone else experienced this?
