Subject: Pageants where everyone wins a title Author: strange to me [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 13:29:33 07/01/07 Sun I have read on other message boards where girls can pay the entry fee (around $300 seems standard) and are guaranteed to go home with a "LARGE" tiara (as in so large it's awkward, pretty much tacky) and a sash with some title on it. Is it just me or are contestants are these pageants just paying their entry fee to "buy" a title? Where is the competition? Is there an interview where girls will learn to effectively converse with others in a professional way? (We cannot deny that pageant interviews do prepare girls for their future when they have job interviews, college interviews, and such.) It seems a lot of times, titles are just made up and given out so every one gets one. I am not trying to creat controversy, just stating my own personal observation and asking if anyone else has observed the same. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ]

It's my understanding that this usually happens when there isn't a state pageant (due to lack of interest or no state directors)so that Maine will be represented at the national pageant. The at-large candidate submits an application and has an interview (often a phone interview), and is "awarded" her title without competing at the state level. She must pay a between a few to several hundred dollars, and she's responsible for finding her own sponsors, paying her way to nationals, etc. Some other pageants (some at local-level, some state) give out so many awards that you don't know who REALLY won the pageant. I'm not against everyone going home feeling like a winner, but it should be clear who the over-all queens are. I also think that age groups should be combined so that there are more than 2 girls close in age competing against each other when ever possible. I do not like the really big crowns/tiaras. If it's too big to wear, what's the point? But that's MY opinion, and we're all entitled to our own. I agree pageant interviews do a lot to prepare girls for their future. I hope most pageants have interviews and aren't just about physical beauty. But, to each her own. Again, these are my opinions, and everyone's entitled to her own view. I hope to read and learn from what others think about this.

Author: click in [ Edit | View ] Date Posted: 16:37:45 07/01/07 Sun You enter a pageant in hopes of winning, but even if you do not go home with the crown, you have gained more self-confidence and enhanced your ability to speak to others in a mature, professional way (assuming there was an interview!). You probably even practiced some social skills when meeting with other contestants, pageant staff, etc. So, in essence, you have won something. These things will help you throughout your life. Still, you must also learn to lose and to lose gracefully. Unless you are extremely lucky in life, you will not "win" every job you apply for. You will not always be perfect. You must learn how to pick your head up and move on from things you may see as negative events. So, crown or no crown, you have learned something from pageantry. My point is, with pageants that award queen titles to EVERYONE, there is no opportunity to learn to lose gracefully! IT'S OK NOT TO WIN EVERY TIME--Such is life! MY OPINION: Pageants should continue with the tradition of awarding ONE QUEEN, and her court of runner-ups. Sure, it's great to get a gift of a trophy for participating or something else, but it should not be necessary to AWARD everyone! If you do not win the crown, PICK YOUR HEAD UP AND MOVE ON...different pageant, different day, different judges.
