Muslim kids go straight away to heaven. For non Muslim kids, I am not sure, and I think that even the scholars are not sure. What I am sure of, is that they do not go to hell.

I also do not know the purpose of them being created only to die so soon. This is one of the questions that often occur to me, especially when I hear of a child death. The answer might be known to us but I have always postponed research because I didn't have time (I only go to reliable sources as I don't want anybody to give me their POV, or their expectation, scholars or no scholars) .

On the other hand, the answer might not be known to us. As I told you before, God didn't give us all the knowledge. There are things that only He knows the purpose of, and as there is nothing we can do about these things, like we cannot prevent them no matter how abiding we are, then I surrender to the fact that I might never be able to know, not in this life time anyway. There is a sura in Qur'an that talks about how vast and comprehensible God's knowledge or power is so much so that it extends over the skies and the earth and He doesn't have any problem nor become tired of taking care of them, while we, human beings, know only very little and could manage only that much.
