currently we have a word going over that bridge. the german word "neger" (negro) is not the same as "nigger" (nigger) which is a derogative swear word. both stem from the same root, latin "niger" (black). "neger" has not yet arrived in the duden encyclopedia as a swear word, not yet but soon will. it still is a colloquial word but somehow some circles try to tell me not to use it anymore. i sure could tell the difference in the meaning of both, in german as in english. if f.e. i use "english" as a swear word for an english national like "hey you english, you!", would it become an official swear word after a while and must not be used in public for defamatory reasons in the future? who decides which word turns bad, all of a sudden?
