Subject: Lotsa skirt questions

I've been doing alot of sewing over the past few years, mainly casual wears and daily/special occasion clothes. I've attempted pageant dresses only a couple of times. I didn't have much issue with Bodices. My problems are with skirts. First, I have patterns from mypageantkid. In the instructions, she says make the cut(got that), make them into Cs(got that), sew them end to beginning together (?) and put together before hemming(?). This is where I'm lost. I get how to make the under ruffle layers. I just dont get the top layers. With her patterns, there's approx 7 circles cut out. Am I combining these?

Also, when doing the rolled hem, do I roll the fabric or is the machine doing it? I just got rid of my crappy serger so Im going to be using a rolled hem foot on my Brother. I hear you saying the machine will "grab" it but where am I sticking it? On the end of the fabric or just outside of the fabric?

Finally, fullness. I realize that, for really good curl and fullness, it depends on the gathering. What I don't get, though, is when I gather it well, it's coming out WAY smaller than originally cut. I.E. I cut out a size 12m skirt. Gathered just a little bit and it ended up being almost a bracelet. What am I missing?

- Yes, you got the "C" correct!! Use more underruffles to get a much fuller skirt, the my pageant kid patterns are a bit out of date, you use more underruffles than "C"s for the really full skirts that are used now. -- click in for more..., 07:03:48 08/03/10 Tue
  - Thank you! Im hoping my foot will come today. I have a TON of extra fabric to practice with before I use what I want to make my skirt with. My ODDs LLD skirt has 2 underruffles and two top layers. Her previous CF had 2 under and 2 top so I'ma start with that. Im so excited! Because of my first frustration, Ive been trying to BUY skirts. lol. But, now, I may finally be able to do them myself. One more question, though. Using MPKs pattern, how many Cs make 1 layer? Today, Im going to boil the fishing line for tighter curls. I wrapped it around a small paintbrush extension pole. lol (NT) -- excited!, 14:17:27 08/03/10 Tue
    - If you cut the fabric on a bias, it will curl tight with tension on the fabric. I have tried the roll and boil when I first started and found that process broke down the fishline and didn't give a consistant curl. - Not sure if you still need help but...If your strips of fabric are gathered tightly enough onto the lining then you should get a good curl. 30# fishing line is what I use and I don't do the boiling thing. I just prefer the bigger "loops" to the small. You curl will happen when you slightly stretch the fabric as you roll hem or serge. Bias means on the diagonal ( the fabric has more stretch) but I just use a strip all the way up the yardage left after my circles are cut. I get plenty of curl because I gather it tightly with my ruffler foot before sewing it onto the lining. HTH (NT) -- Tiffany, 17:20:43 08/11/10 Wed
