Hi Leah: Thanks for posting. No, your friend isn't crazy, she actually gave you good advice.

I was exactly like your son when I was eight. I hated sports and most boyish things, but loved playing with my sister's dolls and wearing female clothes (my mother's or my sister's) whenever I could.

What your son is looking for is a transformational experience, the freedom to explore his identity. A personal growth experience and an emotional release.

I would suggest, if possible, giving him a "girl day". Isolate him as much as possible from any potential negative feedback or criticism, and dress him up as a girl to the extent possible, and see how he reacts. My guess is that he will love the attention and the special feeling he gets.

Wearing dresses, hosiery, heels, makeup, having long hair, etc. are sensations, and there is no reason why a boy shouldn't experience them if he is so inclined.

Don't worry about your ex. If he is a bad father to begin with, it's obvious his input will be biased. DCF caseworkers know all about gender variance.
