The 21st Annual LaPetite, Pre-teen, and Teen International Pageant was held on Saturday in Calais. Girls from age 4-16 from both Maine and New Brunswick competed. From beginning to end, it was a wonderful experience for the girls, and the show was great! This year, all funds raised from the pageant were donated to Hospice.

Pageant Director Barbara Lara, who has been teaching dance for more than 40 years, choreographed two opening production numbers: one for the LaPetite contestants, who were adorable, and the second for the Pre-teens and Teens, who were looking cool! All of the girls did a great job, and those of us in the audience could tell they were having fun!

Contestants were judged on interview earlier in the day. The evening competition included casual wear modeling, formal wear, and for the pre-teens and teens, an on-stage question.

For the first time at this pageant, contestants had the option of competing in talent.

While waiting for the scores to be tallied, Barbara Lara and husband Jose wowed the audience with their dance skills. Barbara's granddaughter Micalah performed a cute hip-hop routine. (It should be noted that while Micalah has competed in pageants in the past, her grandmother does not feel it is appropriate for her to compete at a pageant directed by a relative.) Micalah served as an official representative for Hospice and wore a tiara which had been won by her mother, who passed away last year.

We were also entertained by the amazing singing of last year's Miss Teen International Breanna Beal and the fast tapping feet of Ms Eastern Maine Talent Queen, Eryn Crowe. Both these young ladies should compete at Miss Maine America next summer.

If I'm forgetting anyone, I apologize. It was a great night of pageantry and entertainment. ALL of the girls who competed should be congratulate for doing a fabulous job!

Because talent was optional, it was scored by a different panel of judges than the pageant itself.

The winners were:

1st RU Haley Smith

Miss International was a prelim to Miss Maine for many years (when Miss Maine had prelims). The young lady from Maine who placed highest would compete at Miss Maine, and the young lady who placed highest from NB would compete as Miss New Brunswick. Last year's 1st runner-up competed at Miss New Bruswick last week and was a runner-up and received the talent award. Unfortunately, Miss International 2007 did not compete at Miss Maine.

Breanna has a beautiful singing voice, plays piano, is active in her community, and would be a great Miss Maine! She was 1st RU at Outstanding Teen this year and won the Miss St. Croix Valley Pageant last year.

Hope she decides to go for Miss Maine!
