Hot Rod: "But I mainly want to comment on the flag. I think it's great they have a Canadian flag hanging. Yes it should be there. AND we SHOULD at least play the Canadian National anthem before games. I think it is only fair. Look at the roster. More Canadians are on the roster than Americans most of the time."
To Hot Rod:
I appreciate your opinion, but 2 points:
(1) They are earning American Dollars for income. Should we be paying them in Canadian Dollars if they are Canadian? Or Russian Rubles if they are Russian? Or Chezc or Slovic whatever their money is called if that's where they are from? No, again, while in Rome....
(2) If we start hanging different nationalities' flags based on our roster, we'd have about 10. My point is that THIS IS AMERICA. OUR flag flies higher here. I have lived in 2 foreign countries via the military. You can bet your bottom dollar that they did not fly their flags at the same level or below ours, they flew theirs higher on the pole. And that was ok with me because, after all, I was in THEIR country. The only place on their soil their flag was not higher than ours was the US military base and the US embassy.
And, BTW, I have suggested before to management that at least once in a while we do the Canadian National Anthem, just for the guys. They didn't like the idea at all! They basically said the same thing I did-on US soil, we sing OUR Anthem.
I have noticed in the Stanley Cup play-offs, they sing the US Anthem when the game is played in the US, and the Canadian Anthem while in Canada. And that is totally cool and correct in IMHO.
Guess we have different views on flag protocol. But if in doubt, ask one of those in uniform presenting Colors pre-Anthem and see what they say about it. Or any American Legion member. They have a whole course on it they used to teach in the public schools, but are no longer allowed to do so. hmmmmmmmm
