I had just posted this over on the other board, but I wanted to share it over here, too. I'd never actually done the math before:
(in response to a note that asked what the benefits were of being a Season Ticket Holder if we don't get free parking, discounts on concessions, etc.)
I agree we should be allowed to exchange our unused tickets for the same day. For the same reason, I don't know who's coming until that day. And I'm building up quite a stack, and I'm worried I won't get them used.
I really like always knowing where I'm sitting. When I spread the word about a game, I can let people know where I'll be. So, that convenience is nice. Just for that, I'll keep getting them. (I also like having even one piece of merchandise that no one else has access to.)
And parking and concessions are a coliseum issue. The venue doesn't want the team there, so they're not going to make it any easier on us to BE there. What I'm saying is that if the team distributes some sort of voucher or coupon for either of those services, they'll have to pay for it. You paid a lot for your tickets, granted, but it's not enough to allow the team to just throw perks at you. It's a business. They can't put out what they don't take in.
But I think a lot of people - I know a lot of people are under the impression that the team itself took away the free parking and is setting the concession prices, but that isn't true.
For example, assume that the team decides to pay for STH parking. I don't know the exact number, but lets say it's about 1100 seats. On average, you can guess there are two people per car. That's $1650 a game in parking alone. (please don't argue that you ride with three other people, this is an assumption that most people are couples.)
Say those people buy about $6.50 in concessions at this game. If the discount were 10% (and my guess is that wouldn't be enough to keep people happy), the team's cost for that would be $715. ($1070 if 15%)
This is an addition of $2365-$2720 to a single game day's operation costs.
You understand that's 237-272 $10 seats they would be spending on perks. Per game.
I want to be clear, I agree we should get those things, but the team isn't able to give them to us.
Contact the coliseum with your complaints, but I guarantee Holmes will just see it as good news.
