A smile tugged the corner of her lips upward, in an amused grin as the colt approached, and stretched out his tri-toned neck. She kept perfectly still, watching him, studying his posture, his movement, his coloring. He appeared healthy enough, though a bit dirty, his coat was healthy, he wasn’t pot-bellied telling of internal parasites. His legs were straight and sturdy, his hooves not cracked, or chipped, no major bumps in the wall, telling of poor nutrition in his young life. Her gaze climbed from his feet, over his back, and chest, up to his ears, and eyes. His ears were a little big, but then again, he was young yet, and might still grow into them. Part of that was likely attributed to his mixed heritage. A zebra wouldn’t survive long if he couldn’t hear predators coming. His eyes were bright, and clear, no gunk built up in the corners, it was still cool enough that the flies weren’t out in force yet. He seemed, overall to be in good health.

Soft words were spoken, nonsense, just getting him used to her voice. She watched for any sign of fear, of anxiety or the flight instinct. It seemed like he was used to humans, he’d certainly had no qualms about coming up to her. Hadn’t even approached all that cautiously, trotting forward like he had. Oh yes, this little one was indeed curious.
