He grinned at his son when he spoke of his ma tanning his hide. The kid looked good...had gotten his mama's good looks, and his height. He could remember him when he was little, looking at him and trying to envision him when he was older, what it'd be like being able to teach him to wrench on an engine, and appreciate the sleek lines and angles of all the classics.

"A person can't live too much of a life with the feds breathin' down his neck. I made it work, though. Traveled a lot, worked jobs for cash, moved on when the heat turned up." Which had been often. A man of his size didn't often go unrecognized if he was being hunted. "They almost got me, a couple years back. I'd taked a job helpin repair a bunch of piers out east in Florida. I was at the far end, and they sealed off the exit." He remebered weighing his options, sure he'd wind up hurtin if he jumped, and certain he'd wind up dead before he gave in and went to prison. "The pier was tall and the waves were choppy as hell, but I figured I'd go for. They managed to get a few into me before I hit the water." He didn't think he'd ever forget that disorientating plunge into the water below. He'd swam hard when he'd gotten his bearings, but blood loss slowed him quick. He'd passed out as some point. "Almost died. Would've, if I hadn't washed up practically at the doorstep at a retired nurse." He fell silent then. She'd been another person he'd put at risk. He had stayed with her nearly 6 months as he recovered.

He shrugged. "Far as the the Feds know now, I'm dead. Washed out to sea. Never to steal other car again." He looked at th burning tip of his cigarrette, frowning slightly. In truth, the past ten years of his life had been a waste. There'd been nothing of any importance...just the running. Always the running. "I'm more interested in what you've done for yourself." He knew the military...or at least assumed it, because of the dog. But he wanted to know everything...what the kid liked, enjoyed doing, had experienced. Wanted to know more things than a mere conversation on the beach before a rainfall could give, but he'd settle for the details. He wasn't plannin' on goin anywhere...so there'd be time.
