The span of years he'd spent locked away with the society's scum would probably always be a not-too-distant memory. He had seen things in that hellish place that could push a person to the outer edge of their sanity, if they didn't harden themselves to it. He'd heard men talk of the truly awful, vile things they had done, some of them with a smile on their face as they spoke. There had been two occasions where he had snapped--both of them sick sex crime fucks. He didn't have the stomach for that kind of thing, and after so long of having to listen to it...he'd snapped. The second occasion had resulted in a shanking...on his end. He'd spent a couple of weeks in the infirmary, and when he'd returned to his block, the two had been removed. He'd been grateful for that.
His resolve had been strong, and while he'd faltered and had fell into times of darkness a couple of times, he'd always tried to keep on the up and up. One day at a time, one minute at a time, one second at a time. Hard to do in a place that really had no time, but it was the only way to survive.
And always, he'd thought of her. She'd been his beacon, really. The port to come home to, if only in his mind, when his life was in shambles around him.
When he felt her arms slide around him, relief washed over him. The woman might not know it, but she had a good heart. It had to be hard to show him compassion, after all he'd put her through. But she did it anyway, and that made him love her all the more.
He felt the softness of hair against the rough exterior of his cheek, and settled into it, breathing in the essence of her. How many times had he wished for her these past years? How many times had he dreamed of having her in his arms again, her full chest against his own? Countless, countless times.
"I didn't want to leave...and always hoped I'd be able to tell you that I'm sorry..." And then her sweet breath was on his lips, followed in the next instant by their softness. His mind reeled momentarily, damn near dizzy with the extent of the moment.
A second later, the fire that had been quelled in the passing years was ignited. His hands lifted and were placed just under her chin, drawing her closer as he deepened the kiss. His tongue flicked at her bottom lip and then the top, tasting the sweetness that had at one time been so compellingly familiar.
