In reply to: Chris 's message, "You guys dont have a CLUE as to what the difference between GROSS to NET horsepower is, never mind what the difference between how your shit dont stink, next to mine! never the less I have the balls to post my name beside my post!" on 19:37:54 12/12/02 Thu

I have been doing some thinking while watching this thread unwind and here are my observations:
Being that a stone stock 1977 Dodge Monaco 440 with 2:76 or so gears was capable of 16.3 seconds in the quarter mile--------stock; I see no reason that a very mildly built 1973-78 big Ford/Mercury 460 V8 is incapable of the low 15/high 14 second bracket in the 1/4.
Think about it; folks.........
Monaco: 4,400 lbs curb weight; big Ford: 4,700 lbs
Monaco: 440 CID V8; Ford: 460 V8, both ca. 8:1 CR
In essence; the foundations for both vehicles are about the same....vehicle weight/engine displacement ratio........about 10 lbs per cubic inch.
Face it: if someone were to delete the catalysts on the MoPar, run 2.5" pipe to a pair of high flow mufflers with full 2.25" tailpipes, swap in a MoPar Performance electronic ignition in lieu of the ELB crap, and install a speadbore carburetor jetted accordingly...........assuming that the running gear was in A1 condition........low 15's at the VERY LEAST would be the result.
Two things that were overlooked were: #1: torque, NOT horsepower moves 2 ton+ vehicles on the street and #2: running 44 PSI radial tires significantly decreases rolling resistance hence less parasitic losses.
Many years ago I tuned up an otherwise box stock 1977 Ford F250 van with the 460 motor fitted with dual exhausts and a low restriction air filter..........well, I floored that puppy and it threw back its head and stormed forward.....needless to say, I back down very quickly lol.
If memory holds me correctly.........that van probably had 3:31 or so gears.........turning taller than P235/70R15 tires.......giving the illusion of a 3:00 or so rear end.

Now let's talk about his car BONE stock, no "lil mods" such as exhausts, ignition, K & N filter, spreadbore carb, or the like! Compare it to a car that weighs & 700 POUNDS LESS!!!!!! and has much more horsepower, which corellates with torque, 11.3:1 compression, SEVERELLY UNDER-RATED by Ford at 370 HP in 1971 as ALL the Mfrs were doing dyno'd at 425 HP. 1/4 mile, 0-60MPH, 0-100, top end, what's say? That's great, Bearhawke! Is that really your name?20:39:20 12/12/02 Thu

Hey Bearhawke.. just think about this.. from a cruise speed 35 mph's, then drop your gas foot to the floor, and hang on cause the rear tires WILL break loose, its an awesome feeling! and you should see the looks on other cruise night cruisers beside me LOL! (NT)Chris22:07:25 12/12/02 Thu
