In reply to: Matt 's message, "Blue Lights" on 14:58:33 12/11/02 Wed

It's the overall purpose of the light and the message it conveys that matters- PULL OVER and let the lighted vehicle safely pass. That is what is taught in driver's education classes, not to yield to only one color of light and not another.

Both red and blue lights are used on some type of official emergency vehicle in all 50 states. In other words, there is no place where only a blue light on a vehicle makes it official and red doesn't or vice versa. So whether it's a police vehicle, ambulance, fire truck or volunteer fireman and the light is blue or red, the motoring public has the same one obligation, and that is to yield the right of way. A driver is not going to look in his rearview mirror when he sees a flashing blue light in New Mexico and think to himself that it's ok and he shouldn't pull over. Likewise, a driver on Maui will still know to pull to the shoulder when he sees a flashing red light coming up behind him.

Give the general public some credit
