Emergency service managers really are stuck in the past, aren't they? Remember when Chrysler had to build altered wheelbase Dodges to meet the CHP's minimum wheelbase requirement because long wheelbase cars handled better? OK, try to imagine a CHP Camaro or Mustang with a 122" wheelbase. Think drag racing funny car. And air conditioning, power steering, automatic transmissions, and even ABS used to be seen as "EVIL" too. But the old dinosaurs hang on. "We like the Crown Vic because it has body on frame construction, even if they do burst into flame a little more than we like," they argue. They seem to forget that NONE of the most popular copcars, the Mopar 383 and 440 equipped Monacos, Coronets, Belvederes, St. Regi, Gran Furys, etc., had body on frame construction. And neither did the M-bodied Diplomats and Gran Furies. Chrysler hasn't built a body on frame passenger car in decades. The reality is that the CVPI is one of the most antiquated car designs still on the road. Only in America would we desperately cling to such ancient technolgy and claim it's better. Remember when the fire service was convinced open cab apparatus, with firemen hanging off the back step was better? Oh, well, the market will eventually force these hide-bound doofuses into giving their officers more modern, better handling, and safer cars. And when it does happen they'll brag about how foresighted they are.
