Rinali smiled cheerfully at every person she passed, stopping to talk to some, merely greeting others. It had been a while since she could just relax and meet new people, or say hello to her friends. After all, she was taken up a lot of the time with running business that Wessae was unavailable to handle, and the Halzay case was getting on her nerves more than she would want to admit. Rinali’s only fault as a leader was her tendency to see things in pure black and white – she had learned things over time, but she still held her views firmly – it was lucky that she had always had a Weyrleader to help with rational judgements, and the calming presence of Lilith.

‘Lilith, is there anything you can do at the moment?’

I fear not. We’ll just have to wait – be patient, Rinali. And keep an eye on Scarth’s rider.

‘I thought you trusted him? Come now Lil, I’ve known S’peer for a long time. Remember, dear, G’rein is a good judge of character.’

The woman felt her dragon’s disgruntled flap of her wings as clearly as if she had been standing next to the queen. He is an alcoholic. I don’t trust people dependant on other substances.

‘As well you shouldn’t. But remember that he hasn’t drunk in two years.’

So he says.

Rinali paused for a minute. ‘Lil, since when are you prejudiced? Be civil to Scarth, for my sake?’

For your sake.
Lilith finished, neatly withdrawing from her rider’s mind and effectively finishing the conversation with just a hint of annoyance in her tone. Having to resist the urge to shake her head at her dragon’s antics, Rinali continued her rounds of the Lower Caverns, pausing behind one whose profile she recognised.

“Brownrider T’rtatus?”
