Author: Dey ~ Shyth, Cat ~ Beneveloth
Subject: ~ Best of Friends ~

Two girls, both of the age of sixteen, walked into the Lower Caverns together. Two greens followed happily, looking at each other and seemingly deep in conversation, like their two riders.
Dey and Cat didn't look as alike as people could be. While Dey had bushy, bronze-brown hair a bit pat her shoulders and looking in the usually fashion that she'd recently gotten it wet, Cat's light, chestnut locks fell only to her chin, framing her face beautifully. Dey's skin was of a subtly paler complexion, while Cat's dark, bronze skin stood out in contrast to her light hair. Dey's eyes were more of a depressed pool of a murky brown, while Cat's bright green seemed to overflow with curiosity and giddiness. Both were about the same height, and both with longer legs than some, but otherwise they looked completely different.

That didn't, however, stop them from being the best of friends.

The two greens, though both small and lithe, had different coloring, looking as different as their riders did. While Beneveloth, affectionately known as Beni, was a soft, gold-green, Dey's Shyth was of a darker, forest green, intertwining subtly with many different greens that had appeared in her swirling hide as she grew a bit older. Both greens were lovely. And, like their riders, they were lovely in two different kinds of ways.

Cat gave a small giggle. "Well," she said, glancing around the Lower Caverns, "I for one think it's great that Rinali got the position of Weyrling Master. As a retired queenrider, she really does need more of a hobby, I believe."
Dey shrugged one shoulder, and looked around as well. "Well, I'd think that Wessea would want her as a little advisor. I mean, have you noticed our numbering? Greens are overrunning the Weyr, and we've barely got four bronzes without mates for Shrineth's expected flight! Not to mention how less we'll have once all the greens start flying…"
"But what about our blues, and browns?" Cat asked, waving a dark hand towards an empty table. "Why take the queens' bronzes?"
Dey sighed, taking her place at Cat's right. She'd always sat on her friend's right for some odd reason, most likely because she always sat to the right of her favorite sibling, Nite, when her family used to eat meals, so the siblings could talk. "You know we don't have enough of them. We've just got a bunch of weyrlings, like us. And most of us are green!"
Cat frowned. "Well… that's true, but what can we do about it?" She asked, absent-mindedly stroking Beni's eye ridge.
"Nothing." Dey sighed, putting her head in her hands. "Nothing, but hope. Who knows? Maybe Shrineth won't be picky, and will forgive the male shortage-and then have a clutch with lots of males."

Before Cat could reply, four little flits popped out of nowhere. A small, flitty blue flew over to Cat, twittering happily and zooming around her head. The other three flew to Dey, a little green settling in her lap, a bronze to her shoulder and a little gold perching on the table next to her empty plate. Scolding the other flits, including blue Gnat, sharply, Rei shook her sparkling head about, showing signs of lust.
"Looks like someone's gonna fly soon." Dey said, stroking emerald Rin in her lap and giggling as she saw bronze Nite looking at Rei with interest. Maybe he'd be in her next flight.
Cat couldn't help but smile as Gnat looked down in shame at being scolded by the gold. "Yeah. Hey, why don't you ask her? About the male shortage, and a queen's reaction?"
Dey gave a smile. "Sure." She looked down at the gold. "Rei? If there were only a few males chasing you, would you be ok? Would you understand if others already had mates?"
Rei's eyes glowed red, and she scolded her sharply, sending her wonderful pictures of her strangling a bronze with a green mate.
Dey was shocked. "Rei! You ought to be ashamed; you'll be glad with what you get, understood?"
The gold scolded her a bit, then started a conversation with the other three flits. Gnat seemed relieved she was still speaking to him.

Next to the table, the two almost-grown greens started their own mental communication.
~ You know, our riders have a point. There aren't many males. ~ Beni observed.
< Very true. > Shyth answered her slightly older clutch mate. < But, is that our fault? I don't remember asking to be green. >
~ Very funny, Shyth. ~ Beni said, giving a draconic laugh. ~ However, I do not believe it was a choice. However, I'd hate to get on Shrineth's nerves now. Who knows? Maybe she'll throw a fit over males. ~
< Somehow, I cannot imagine her doing that. > Shyth observed. < She's normally such a good Senior Queen. Would she really get mad about something that can't be helped? >
~ Who knows? Maybe mating becomes most important. Perhaps we'll only understand when we start our mating flights. ~
< Perhaps, > Shyth said, sighing. < I still think she should understand, though. >
~ She's a good dragon. ~ Beni said soothingly. ~ Perhaps she will. ~

Both conversations went on, and distantly both Dey and Cat wondered if someone else would join their conversation.

((Hey, sorry if I offended anyone with the whole talk on dragons, but it is a major problem! And, Wessea ~ Shrineth, I don't mean to insult you. Shrineth probably will be spectacular. I'm just having my chars do that thing where you think of the worst possible scenario. Anyone wishes to join them, you're welcome to!))
