Author: D'minic, Raz
Subject: That's why I use my little '>~<' symbol. I can NEVER think of titles. -_-
In reply to: Trag~Baki~Tyri 's message, "~Happy~Days~(Couldn't think of a title. XD)" on 08:51:25 02/24/05 Thu

D'minic's eyes light up, as any dragonrider's is wont to do when asked about their beloved dragon. "Ulyssanth? He's in great shape, though not as great as he thinks he is," the brownrider chuckles. "He keeps telling me he's ready to fly the whole ocean. I think his mind has been poisoned by all the adventure stories he's overheard from the older dragons. He says trying to survive during the disasters sounds fun!" His dark eyes only dim a little when he says that; he hadn't been a dragonrider during those disasters, and hadn't felt the searing pain of your dragon knowing every single time one of your fellows died, anywhere on Pern, until finally communication was lost between the dragons (perhaps a blessing in disguise, terrifying as it was to realize you could no longer reach another Weyr by thought alone). And Ulyssanth's irrepressible enthusiasm is beginning to outweigh the personal pain of losing his family - who might, after all, not actually be dead. The grin doesn't leave D'minic's face, at any rate, even though he pauses for just a moment before going on. "Right now he's up on the heights, sleeping," he continues, gesturing up towards the ceiling to indicate the brown's general position. "Or slipping in and out of sleep, at any rate. He keeps waking up to eavesdrop on the other dragons. Homer's with him," he adds with affection and amusement in his voice. "I honestly think it was the dragon that Impressed that creature. One of these days they're going to fly off together into the great unknown, and leave me behind because I don't share their ideas of 'adventure'." The brownrider is joking, of course. Ulyssanth would never abandon him; the idea would be impossible for any draconic mind to even attempt to grasp. But sometimes D'minic can't help but be a little exasperated by his dragon's constant urge to go exploring and do dramatic things, when the most dramatic thing D'minic wants to do is fly a few greens and show off a bit, and never leave the Weyr. He likes his new home too much to leave it. If he had been born in the days of colonization, or even in the days of AIVAS, he might understand a little better why Ulyssanth had chosen that particular name upon his Hatching, or it had been chosen for him, or however dragons got their names. But in this day and age, he doesn't know his home planet's mythology and can't grasp the appropriateness of it, even though it would certainly amuse him. And that's for the best - because dragons are still evolving, and in those days he might have had Ulyssanth, but it wouldn't have been this Ulyssanth. Throwing off the distracting thoughts of his dragon's adventuresome nature, D'minic raises an eyebrow at Trag. "But if I started rambling about my dragon, we'd still be here a sevenday from now. What about you? Are you going to stand as a Candidate once Shrineth lays her clutch? Or is there something else you want to try your hand at, instead of being a dragonrider?" He's been noticing, recently, that Trag is taller than he was even a few months ago - and while he's not sure if the boy's old enough to be a Candidate (D'minic's never been good with ages), he thinks it's safe enough to ask. There's a pang of worry amid the avuncular interest in pride, too, because when children grow up they do tend to grow away from their caretakers, too.

((I'm not sure how old you set Trag's age at, so I'm sorry if he's not old enough to be a Candidate; I just took a wild guess. D'minic and I are BOTH bad at ages. =^^;= And sorry for going off into randomness on Ulyssanth's name; I'm just a big enough fan of Greek legend that the moment I saw his name on the Hatching post, it just CLICKED. "Ulysses! Awright!" And it kind of set his personality for me, right then and there. [/total nerd]))
