Speer tilted his head a little to one side, considering Halzay’s words for a few moments. It seemed as if Elaini and W’ntyr would be together for a long time, if thing continued in the way they were currently doing. And if W’ntyr and Elaini could stay together and have a happy family, then all the better. S’peer never liked seeing his friends upset – who did? – and Halzay’s testament to Elaini’s personality seemed reassuring for W’ntyr’s future with his weyrmate. “I expect it’ll work out. If Elaini’s like that, then she won’t jeopardise their relationship, wills he? And I’d trust W’ntyr to stay loyal to her even if he was stuck somewhere else for five years.” G’rein had always been a little annoyed at how firmly heterosexual W’ntyr was – who wouldn’t want someone that loyal t come home to. Well, S’peer excepted, of course, but that’s besides the point. He doesn’t really have much of an idea about what loyalty to one person means.

But the bluerider was snapped out of his reverie by a delighted cry of: “S’peer!” He turned around to find Atiyana standing next to him, waiting for him to stand up. With a grin, S’peer acquiesced to her unspoken request and she hurled herself at him, hugging him tight and giggling like a child as he swung her round, setting her on the floor gently – her arms still wrapped around his waist as she squeezed him once again in breathless happiness. “I Impressed! A green! She’s wonderful, S’peer, she’s beautiful!”

S’peer kissed her on both cheeks and once on the mouth for good measure, laughing at her delight. Please remember, however, that a kiss between Ati and S’peer is merely an affirmation of friendship – not of romance. “Didn’t we all say you could do it?” He asked, raising one eyebrow, Halzay forgotten for a moment in his pride for his friend.

She was beaming with joy, and she gushed everything out in one breath. “I can fight Thread after all – and I want you to be in her first flight because I want someone I can trust and you – ” But all of a sudden S’peer remembered the woman still sitting at the table, and he cut Ati off mid-sentence by clearing his throat and nodding to Halzay. In front of the greenrider was no place to have this conversation. Noticing the other woman for the first time – Ati tends to live in her own world – she instantly burst into smiles all over again, offering the rider her chapped right hand. “Hello! I’m one of S’peer’s friends!” S’peer himself sat down, and Ati followed suit, arranging the skirts of her bright green gather dress as she did so. “It’s nice to meet you!”

“Ati…” S’peer began quietly, catching her attention with his tone of voice. “May I introduce you to Halzay, rider of green Elizabeth?” Atiyana’s face fell for a moment, but she recovered her composure admirably.

“Oh.” Then a more meaningful: “Oh,” as she realised the full impact of S’peer and Halzay sitting down at the same table together.

“Halzay, this is Atiyana, rider of green…”

“Loriath.” Ati supplied promptly, recovering her high spirits with even a thought of her dragon, but she blushed when she remembered who Halzay was. “Did I interrupt anything? I’m sorry…”

That is the thing, Elizabeth. Scarth told the green, a mirthless chuckled touching his words. S’peer wants to know the child, and also your rider, but he thinks that your rider hates him, because he fully expects her to. He wants to look after his child, but he’s hesitant because he doesn’t want to hurt your rider. I think she’ll have to tell him things plainly if any progress is to be made.
