All I can say is the cool kid often had what we call speedo swimsuits and I tried to get my mom to buy me one, but no suck luck. I was always given baggy boxer suits. A few times I borrowed some from a friend. Sometimes we changed in the boys room at the town pool or in school. I loved the way the cloth puled my balls up together and I new that the outline of my peepee could be seen. But that was not often. Embarrassment, no, it let friends and any girls who noticed see that I was not a little boy.
