The above is true w/ some assumptions which are normally true, such as a 7 iron head is considerably heavier than a 3 iron head. This increase in weight CONTRIBUTES to the decrease in CLUBHEAD speed from a 3 to a 7. The shorter shaft ALSO CONTRIBUTES. Just how much (on a percentage basis) the shorter shaft contributes compared to the heavier clubhead (the heavier clubhead slows down the entire swing)is subject to discussion.

Put it another way. Compare:

Clubhead speed w/ a normal 3 iron.
Clubhead speed w/ a normal 7 iron.
Clubhead speed w/ a 3 iron configured to 7 iron length.

Clearly the normal 3 iron clubhead speed would be the greatest. However, just as clearly the "short" 3 iron clubhead speed would be greater than the 7 iron clubhead speed due to its lighter weight. Moreover the SWING speed of the short 3 iron would be greater than the SWING speed of the normal 3 iron due to it's shorter length and overall lighter weight. The question then becomes does that greater swing speed compensate enough for the shorter length to equalize the CLUBHEAD speeds. I don't know, but the answer is not a simple as some of you are making it.

It may be that the increased confidence of swinging the shorter club allows it to be swing harder which could well produce an INCREASE in club head speed for a particular golfer.

All of this stuff is so imprecise that "basic physics" doesn't apply. It's very complex physics, coupled with physiology and a healthy dose of psychology...
