Subject: City or Village?
In reply to: 's message, "Re: REPOST-w problems w/blindly following American model of econ. development" on 07:58:48 02/20/00 Sun

We don’t want people migrating to the cities. That is already happening in PNG and it has brought a major squatter problem.

Instead, we need to develop the villages. We need to make the villages a viable alternative to the cities. If the villages had some of the amenities of the 21st century then more people would want to stay in the village.

What are the types of industries that the villages can build that would generate the type of money they would need to keep the people in the village?

We need to equip the villages with the things that people usually go to the cities to find. If we can do that then we will have gone a long way towards bettering PNG.

So the question is this. Why do the people go to the cities in the first place? Define the reasons why people move to the cities and incorporate them into the village and you will have a country that will develop without losing its’ identity.

Actually this is the real American model. The country of America is made up of communities (villages). The National level is the highest level but we can go down the pole to the state, then the county, then the city, then the neighborhood, then the household, until you get to the individual. The great thing about America is that an ordinary citizen’s house is not that much different from the White House. They both have water, power, phone, road access, etc. If we developed the villages into small townships with all these things then PNG would be America! The only difference is that we keep our own culture.
