MOST OF US WOULD KNOW THAT BACK HOME THERE USED TO BE TRADITIONAL PLANTS OR MEDICINES USED IN ABORTION OR TO PREVENT BIRTH. THOSE ARE RARELY USED THESE DAYS, BUT THEY USED TO BE USED MUCH MORE OFTEN BEFORE.

BEFORE STEEL AXES, PEOPLE HAD TO LIMIT THEIR FAMILIES IN SOME AREAS BECAUSE IT WAS TOO HARD TO MAKE A BIG ENOUGH GARDEN TO FEED A BIG FAMILY. SO YOU KEPT THE FAMILY SMALL. IN OTHER PARTS OF PNG THERE WAS MORE MOVEMENT AND AGAIN, FAMILIES HAD TO BE KEPT SMALL.

TWO OTHER COMMENTS:
THE TRADITIONAL MEDICINES SOMETIMES ARE STRONGER THAN THE FACTORY MEDICINES. THEY ARE JUST AS GOOD, BUT IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE EASIER TO HAVE SIDE EFFECTS. SUCH MEDICINES WOULD NEVER BE REGISTERED IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES BECAUSE WHEN MILLIONS TAKE THEM, THERE IS TOO MUCH RISK. BUT THEY ARE PERFECTLY OKAY FOR PNG.

SOME OF THE ALKALOID CHEMICALS IN OUR TRADITIONAL MEDICINES ARE THE SAME OR VERY SIMILAR TO THAT USED IN FACTORY MEDICINES.

FINALLY- YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO BLAME SOME OF THE INCREASED MORTALITY TODAY ON THE NEWFOUND DEPENDENCY ON FACTORY DRUGS CAUSED BY APO'S THRUOUT THE COUNTRY PROMOTING THEM. IN OTHER WORDS, PEOPLE ARE LOSING THE TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS, SO THEY ARE NOW WORSE OFF THAN THEY WERE 100 YEARS AGO DURING THE MANY TIMES WHEN THE AID POSTS RUN OUT OF MEDICINE.
