Subject: BUT WE MUST LEARN TO USE THR RIGHT TOOLS
In reply to: 's message, "Problem with STABILITY IN GOVERNMENT??" on 02:19:11 01/20/00 Thu

That wasn’t the Fox that you replied to, but I’d like to add a few comments to your follow up.

I acknowledge your point about the benefit of instability, but I feel that the use of such as a check on corrupt politicians diverts attention from the overriding benefits that can result from a stable government. We have already fallen into the trap of using votes of no confidence to usurp power rather than as a means of instilling transparency and accountability. This can be seen from the immediate return to the status quo, following each change of government. In the end, we are no better off than when we were under the regime disposed off by the vote of no confidence.

We must use the right tools for the right job, and develop a system that ensures leaders are fully accountable to their people and that gross misuse of power is kept in check. We must ensure that the right people get in and we can’t do that with our present selection and voting process. Candidates need to do their time and prove that they have what it takes to hold that seat in parliament.

Many go in green and get overwhelmed by the enormity of the tasks of leading the country. They have to be politically astute, and I don’t see sufficient display of this within the current crop of tyrants. The result? They are held in contempt by almost every sector of the PNG society. I certainly would not be willing to die for a country led by people led by such people.

The Chan Haiveta regime was stable, but corrupt, and there are many instances of this, the most popular one being the Sandline saga. This episode alone, illustrated once and for all how much these tyrants as are willing to corrupt proper processes in order to satisfy their egos. The redirection of K6million from the defence budget to make the deposit into Sandline’s account was done contrary to all known NEC directives and procedures. Even the transfer of said monies out of the country via the PNG Bank contravened set procedures. The way the Tim Spice was able to spice them up and roll them around like jelly between his fingers was downright disgusting to me as a PNGean. It brought home to me the shallowness of these tyrants. They may make a lot of noise, but they are as empty as the drums that they so resemble.
