A few more thoughts:

We seem to have 2 CCs (VGA and stock) which work intermittently. I'd go with Scott's analysis regarding 'stock' - i.e. the fan issue.

Regarding 'VGA' which didn't work and now does (albeit needing screen adjustment - they always do), I'd also wonder about an intermittent contact somewhere, perhaps the a/b to CRT cabling, or else even the actual seating of the a/b in its edge connector. It would certainly be worth checking and re-checking every flying lead.

But, hey, at least you have 2 working CCs!
