My mom told me as an adult that she could always tell when I was lying because I wouldn’t look her in the eye when I told one. Her method of determining if I was lying was to ask me a series of clarifying questions that got more and more difficult until I was forced to admit to the lie. If I still didn’t fess up, the question “so if I call xyz, they will tell me the same story?” usually did the trick.

I recall one such incident from when I was in the 4th grade. It was towards the end of the school year, and the school offered after school study sessions for the state standardized testing. I HATED going to these sessions but was forced to.

One day, I just decided to skip and got on the school bus home. The story was going to be that I had received an urgent letter from the office that we had a family emergency and that I needed to come straight home. Unbeknownst to me, the teacher who ran the study session called my mom to let her know I wasn’t there. Mom got home from work and the questioning began!

“Why would the school know about a family emergency? I would have just picked you up!”

“Are you sure that note was meant for you?”

“So are you saying Ms. xyz lied?”

This time, I let her call the school office to ask. No, I don’t know why. I actually just stood in the kitchen (where my spankings took place) while she made the call because I just knew I was doomed. As expected, the office confirmed that no such note had been given out, and I had to take the walk of shame to pick a switch for my spanking.
