There were three occasions when I was caught having done something wrong and given the opportunity to tell the truth about it and didn't. Mom and Dad wouldn't let on that they knew the answer, but sometimes the question they asked me indicated I'd better not lie. Lying was definitely special in our household, a total cardinal sin type thing.

If I foolishly lied, it was something my parents took very seriously and even once ordered my babysitter to enforce a spanking when they found out I'd told a lie about where I'd been. Mom and dad were never afraid to spank me in front of family, and it was no secret children being spanked bare bottom in front of opposite sex peers found the experience very unpleasant.

A punishment for "egregious" misbehavior would usually involve a thigh spanking in the living room with my 2 sisters watching for the misbehavior and trousers would come off for that. It was intended to be a spectacle and make an example out of a child who wouldn't want to again be in the same position. However, lying about what you'd done in the process would mean you'd have to take off your underwear as well. This functioned as a major increase in the 'potency' of the already public spanking and up until age 13-14 it was known to be, for lack of a better term, the ultimate punishment because of how unspeakably embarrassing it was designed to be. All 3 of us became naturally very modest children around 9 or 10. The very threat of it would scare us straight and make us weak in the knees, despite my parents never giving me the belt until I was 15 (only happened twice). These punishments were pretty exclusively administered by hand. I don't know that my older younger sister ever got the belt and my youngest sister only once I'm aware of.

It was a very effective punishment in terms of deterrence. It made all of us more truthful and probably made it much easier for our parents to raise us. They only ever enforced it on my 1 year younger sister once that I can remember and my 3 year youngest sister twice. In the case of myself and youngest sister, we both on individual occasions had to submit to this punishment from the family babysitter Ryan, who was asked to enforce what he labeled "public humiliation" (he was the only one who used that word, mom and dad almost never did but never objected when he did funny enough, might as well call it what it is...) basically as an employee duty because my parents were never the 'wait til your father gets home' type. They trusted him to spank all 3 of us, even insisting that he do so bare bottom which he definitely felt bad about doing but was professional about inflicting. The difference between myself and my youngest sister is she was spanked by him in front of myself and our sister while I was spanked in front of a neighborhood school friend whose family my family had an informal agreement with regarding punishment. My younger sister I know for a fact was spanked bare bottom by him one time but it happened behind closed doors from an act of pure mercy on his part.

This post opened up a lot of memories. It makes me wonder if it was fair for them to lay a trap like that that determined if we would be afforded either privacy or modesty, or if we would be sentenced to public humiliation. That being said, it happened to all 3 of us combined a single digit amount of times and at least in my case I remember exactly what I had done to earn each spanking where my sisters or my friend was allowed to watch and do think back on what I had done and the resulting punishment with shame. All 3 involved a conscious, deliberate lie on my part and I think these spankings made me a very honest person.
