Were there any adults that always seemed to know if you were not being truthful?

Would they be responsible for determining if you were punished or not?

Could your parents detect a lie?

Did you ever lie to get out of a paddling?

At the boy's school that I went to, we had this one lady, she ran the office behind the front office. (Technically the front office was called "reception", and the second office was called "student services") She knew every boy by name, how influential his parents were, and if there were any special conditions surrounding us.

(Allergies, instructions from our parents, anything that was in our file, and even things that were not.)

So if you think about it, to be the one to make the decision whether what we did warranted getting corporal punishment or not, she'd be the one to know.

She is she even knew our birthdays, and made a point of telling us "Happy Birthday" on the day, or (if we were away from school over the weekend) the following Monday.

Don't take that mean that I think she was a nice lady. She wasn't!
I mean, she could be nice, and was probably pleasant more often than not. But she could be down right mean and cruel too!

If you are over the age of forty, then I could describe Mrs Hendrix to you as a very subdued version of Sophia Petrillo. She could say anything she wanted at any time.

But she often did keep to her own protocol that made her feel like she was above everyone else. (Which probably gave her more of a Dorothy vibe.) Or at least thought she was.

There wasn't really anyone except the principle or the Dean of Boys who would challenge her. And even they didn't most of the time.

But if you're much younger, however, then you probably have no idea who Sophia and Dorothy was. Don't worry about that.

Suffice to say that Mrs Hendrix was more on top of her game than anyone else in the school. It was very unusual for even the teachers to put a lie past her.

And she had no restraint against calling out a dishonest teacher in front of us. But she was also merciless in taking us boys down whenever we were dishonest with her.

The word "fib" was actually one of her favorite words. (A fib is a lie when told by a child.) I heard that word a little bit at home, but I've come to associate it in my head more with her than anyone else.

That and the phrase, "silly boy".

I can't count how many times I heard someone (student or teacher) say something to the effect of, "How do you even know that?"

And her reply was always a variant of, "EVERYONE runs their mouth in this office, sooner or later, dear!"

And granted our personal information was in our file, and she did write our files. But to have that information memorized... all of it?

That kind of seems like a super power!

To give one example, I was incredibly homesick during my first semester. And it was very likely because of that, NONE of my disciplinary recommendations during the first semester resulted in me being sent to "The Chairs".

(If you get sent to "The Chairs" that means you get the "horse stick")

Six graders got the "horse stick" all the time at that school, assuming that they did something serious enough. One of my roommates got it because he repeatedly kept running his mouth after bedtime, despite multiple warnings.

I probably did something as bad or worse than that, but it obviously got overlooked the first semester, even if not later.

Did you have any adults that were just always a step ahead of you?
