It is true for parents because I do not recall anyone as a kid, teen or later in life as an adult saying that they hated their parents for spanking them and never considered it as abuse, no matter how harsh they were spanked.

However several have said that they considered it as abuse when spanked by non parents, like teachers, babysitters and others who were not their parents.

So one must make a distinction here even though there may be cases like yours who found an adult out of the family as a parental substitute concerning care and discipline.
